Carmen's POV:
Today was always the scariest day of the year. As I stood in front of my mirror, smoothing out my dress and brushing my dark red hair. I tried to smile but I couldn't. I am just to afraid. Today is the day every child fears. Today is the day of The Reaping.
My Mother walked into the bedroom and smiled at me.
"Carmen! You look beautiful in that dress!" She exclaimed.
I half-smiled back at her but then my sister walked in. Petal, my twin, was wearing the exact same dress as me and she looked as miserable as me. She had her hair in a side plait. We're both 14 years old and, surprisingly, get on better with each other than other children our age.
"Come on girls, we cannot be late for the reaping! I have to go and get Rosie ready...." Mother said.
Rosie is our 11 year old sister. Unlike us, she had raven black hair and is rather tall for her age. Mother walked out of the room and towards Rosie's down the hall. I finished plaiting my hair and turned towards Petal who's shaking now.
"Carm, I'm scared! Really scared!"
I pulled her in for a hug, and whispered into her hair.
"It's going to be okay, Petal! Your name isn't in there THAT many times! Not as many as Rosie's and Mine!"
We started to smile but then the words my mother shouted up to us, made us both shake.
"Petal, Carmen, Rosie! Its time!"
Petal and I walked out of the bedroom and turned to see Rosie, wearing a pale blue dress. Her hair had been put into two plaits. She looked 6 years old again. I held out my hand for her, but she didn't take it. We walked downstairs and out of the door. Towards the Centre.
At this moment, I'm praying with all my heart...not Rosie...not Petal...not Tom...not me....none of us....please!
We all got separated, even me and Petal. Rosie was stood at the front, with all of the other 11 year old's. They all looked to scared to death. Just like Rosie, this is their first reaping and yet, Rosie's name is in there god knows how many times!
Ellie Gold staggered onto the stage, wobbling in her ridiculous heels. She stood there and gave us a boring speech about why they do the Hunger Games. Its easy for her though, She's not risking her life in the games, She's living in the Capitol!
"So," she said, in her simpering voice, "As all of you know, this is the 100th annual Hunger Games, So we have a few 'tricks' up our sleeves. But instead of having 2 tributes from each district, We're having 4! 2 Girls and 2 Boys." Everyone gasped. I looked straight over to Rosie who looked to me. I then turned to Petal who was shaking.
"Like always, Ladies first! And May the odds be ever in your favour,"
Her hand circled the bowl, and then selected a name. We all went silent, waiting for the name to be read out,
"Rosie Petrova!"
A scream escaped from my mouth, and Rosie just stood there shell-shocked, I tried to run forward to grab her, to hold her back, but I was being held by guards, Ellie extended her hand to help Rosie onto the stage when a voice shouted from behind me. One that sounded familliar. Too familiar.
"I volunteer!"
A silence falls over the crowd of people and I turn to see Petal stand there,
"I volunteer as tribute," she says, calmly walking up to the stage, she hugs Rosie and pushes her towards me. I grab her in my arms and cradle her. She's got tears running down her face. The guards seperated us and pushed her towards mother. I got pushed back into position and Rosie still stands with mother, holding on for dear life. My eyes never left the stage as I watch Petal.
"What's your name, darling?" Ellie asked.
"P-Petal" she says, in a shaky voice, "Petal Petrova."
"And how old are you Petal?"
"I-I'm 14."
Ellie smiles and walks back over to the bowl. She puts her back into the bowl. She pulls out a label and chuckles to her self,
"Carmen Petrova!"
