Intro ; "Dude, why is everyone so mopey?""Coming!" I yelled downstairs to my older brother, Lance.
"Get you're ass down here!" He yelled back. I was already walking out the door, geez.
I got in the passenger side of the car and put in my ear buds as soon as I got in and buckled up. Lance always liked to ramble on and on about politics and a bunch of other stuff I didn't care to learn about. After all, I was just a 17 year old guy, he was a 35 year old wise man, or so he thought.
But I loved him, he was the closest thing I had to a father or parent figure. Our mom and dad had died when I was 13 and him at 24, in a car accident. Since he was already an adult, with a two year old son and wife, I was sent to live with him. I mean sure he was kind of young, but he seemed to know what he was doing.
"Grey!" He snapped his fingers in my face, bringing me back to reality, "Grey!" I took out my left ear bud and raised my eyebrow at him in question.
"We're here." He stated. I looked out the window towards my boring old high school, Westen High. I opened the door, slinging my backpack over my shoulder. "Love you." I said before stepping out and shutting the door behind me. I walked up the steps to the big metal front doors, noticing everyone seemed a little more gloomy than usual. As soon as I entered the school, a few girls ran up to me practically hanging on to me for dear life. I'm not trying to should like a cocky asshole, because I'm not, but I'm what many would describe as 'popular'. I hated the term; it sounded like something only said in teen movies.
I lumbered down the hall hoping they'd get the hint that I didn't care about how the weather was or that this colored shirt looked nice on me, but no luck. Instead of trying to push them off, I just tuned them out and instead focused my attention to these two freshman girls standing by the lockers, trying to eavesdrop on their conversation.
"Why does everyone looked so depressed?" One asked the other. "What?! You didn't hear about that girl?!" The other one all but squealed. "No what gi-" was all I could hear before my best friend Cameron came up to me, doing one of those 'bro hug' things.
"Dude, why is everyone so mopey?" I asked going to finally get an answer to this question I've had done I got here. "Oh, some junior chick com-" the bell cut him off, of course.
"Hey I'll catch you later man." He yelled to me already half way down the hall. I started my way to my first period, AP calculus. It was one of my favorite classes, seeing how I was actually pretty smart, even though everyone doubted it.
I ended up being late, for like the fifth time this quarter, and my teacher glared at me as I walked in. "How nice of you to join us Mr. Mason."
"Sorry Mrs. Boothe, won't happen again." I say heading to my seat. I'd say that every time I was late and it became second nature to say every time I needed to get out of it. "Heard it many times from you, take a seat. Now as I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted before" she shot me a look of irritation, " I have some very devastating news to report."
When she said this, everyone maintained a straight face, presumably because apparently everyone knew about this except me, which explains why I was practically on the edge of my seat waiting for her to announce whatever it was. "Carter Daniels commit suicide this past weekend." She said warily, a look of sadness and nervousness plastered on her somewhat old, slightly wrinkled features.
I tried to think back to who Carter Daniels was, and when it hit me its as if my heart stopped for a second. My only encounter with her was when I accidentally bumped into her on accident in the hallway and she fell and I tried to help her up. When I held my hand out for her she looked at it nervously and just got up her self. I took a step closer and asked her if she was alright, and she backed away quickly making it seem as though I were going to hurt her. 'I'm fine' is all she said before she scurried down the hall not taking a second glance back at me.
