When the 1950s ended, the clash between Gibson and Fender was growing bigger than ever before, being the two most popular names in guitar/rock and roll history.
Fender's newly produced Stratocaster and Telecaster
guitars-they were starting to monopolize the guitar market. Gibson on the other hand, they weren't too keen about this.

The Stratocasters and Telecasters suave and very modern design made them extremely famous at the time.
As a result of the Fender combos breakout, The President of Gibson; Ted McCartne put plans out for a new brand, new range of so called "futuristic" type guitars to compete. This resulted in the production of the Flying V, and the Gibson Explorer. (Guitars) Both of these guitars were big commercial busts for Gibson.

Ted McCarty recruited Ray Dietrich, a car designer in order to build him a revolutionary guitar that could finally be able to go on head to head with the Stratacaster and Telecaster.

Dietrich continued to modify the model of the Gibson Explorer, and round off its edges, in addition to then attaching two "wings" to the guitar, and adding a sole piece of wood for the neck. This peace would go inside the body of the guitar.

The Gibson Firebird, a guitar so uniquely shaped, many people believed it was backwards because of the right hand horn, which was larger than the left facing side. The guitar (Firebird) was unofficially dubbed "reverse", a title which several of the Firebirds continue to hold to this day.
