Entry #17
Control
It's, uh, becoming more and more difficult to keep recording these journal entries. Things are changing quickly, and I'm worried that the situation is getting out of hand.
So last week, Charmer was all excited about some big plan he'd been waiting to try, but apparently he needed someone like me to help him do it. Charmer kept on saying that it was the big night he'd been waiting for. But I told him I don't know what to do to help. He told me to just give this hand signal to Ghostboy and be ready at a specific time. Uh, well, you can't see it, but I'm doing the signal right now.
I woke up that night to the quiet chirping sound of crickets and squeaking of rats feasting on leftovers from last night's dinner, which was only a few hours ago. I, uh, obviously didn't get much sleep that night, but it's better than getting no sleep at all like I used to do. I haven't gone totally sleepless since those first few days in this joint. It was early, so early I couldn't leave my cell.
There were about ten prison guards were on nightwatch. They spent the night walking down the dark blueish gray halls (that were only lit by dim ceiling lights and force fields) and telling not-so-funny jokes that only the guards would laugh to, and they were told to make sure every prisoner is in the right place.
A few of them routinely walked, like, right past my jail cell. Charmer warned me about this. They didn't suspect a thing, as I pretended like I was still sleeping.
All the guards turned the corner, and then I gave the hand signal to Ghostboy, one of Charmer's most trusted friends. Apparently he was with Charmer when they was caught by the police. Oh, s-sorry, I meant were caught, not was. This slammer, the people here, my friends... everything around me is changing how I talk and even act. I think I'm losing myself... and it's scaring me. Well, a-anyways, uh, Charmer tells me everyone calls him Ghostboy because he earned that prison name for using his intangibility power to sneak past guards and get food for his friends.
And then, I could see that Ghostboy was holding something, like... like a remote. It was small and dark, but I couldn't really make it out. Honestly, I wonder how he got it past security with all the cameras and energy fields around. Not to mention, this jail is swarming with guards. I gotta say, he's really, really good. The thing is, I'm not sure if that comforts me... or if it makes me trust everyone even less.
So many questions I could've asked but there aren't no answers. Ah, no, no, no! Are no answers. Are. All I could do was watch and hope that... that whatever this plan was wouldn't need me to use my powers to hurt anyone. I've hurt more than enough people, and I promised never again. Never, not even for Charmer. Not for Gavin. That's why I'm here. Everyone else is too, even if they don't accept it.
I didn't see anything change at first, but then I noticed something was different. The color of the force fields around my cell, they changed from light blue to red. Ghostboy's cell changed too, and I guessed the same happened to Charmer's and Blue's and Pig's rooms. The barriers seemed to be shutting down, but not a single siren went off, as though nothing had changed. No one, not even a single guard noticed. Only the few prisoners who happened to be awake saw it happen, but they couldn't make a sound. Their soundproofed chambers made sure of that.
The force fields to our cells completely deactivated. Right away, I asked Ghostboy what was going on. I was pretty quiet and he was busy looking around the corner. He didn't answer, so I ran to him as fast as I could, but I couldn't go two steps without looking over my shoulders, like invisible hands were grabbing me from all angles. It's that feeling you get after seeing a scary movie past midnight, where you know someone is watching you and just waiting for a chance to attack you, so you'll do anything you can to protect yourself. Usually that just means running around like a crazy man and putting your back against the closest wall. Though in the prison halls, there are no walls to lean on that wouldn't electrocute me, and making any loud noises will result in several guards beating you till you pass out.
