Chapter 1: Without music, life would be a mistake

Aria Emerson put her headphones into her ears as the bus to school lurched forward. As much as Aria hated the bus, she could deal with the noise by popping her headphones in. She started to hum along to the song blasting through her head. The song of today was Demons by Imagine Dragons. She closed her eyes to stop her heart from racing. Today was her first day at Capella High and she was more nervous than she had ever been in her life.

Aria's father was a soldier in the army. She considered herself an army brat but she was anything but. She was quiet, shy, and never had her own opinion about anything. She did have her own opinions but she was never one to express them. Instead, she went with the crowd. She disappeared. That's all she wanted, to disappear.

Her mother wasn't a nice person. She insulted Aria and she practically hated Aria. This wasn't a good situation considering Aria's dad was constantly away on work. Her mother had never laid a hand on her but Aria never doubted that she would. The time wasn't right yet apparently. Her mother proceeded to come home drunk every night and call Aria a slur of words that should never leave a mother's mouth especially when addressing her own child. Because of this, Aria considered herself to be fat, ugly, and worthless. All because her own mother threw the words at her. Never mind the fact that she was tormented at her old school by girls and guys a like.

Aria never had any real friends because she moved too much. She was never to make any strong relationships. Them you add that her mother didn't want anyone over their house because she never believed that Aria could make friends. Aria had come home from kindergarten one day and asked her mother if her friend could come over. Her mom responded by telling Aria that she was a worthless liar. That no one would want to come over because she could never be loved. Aria, unfortunately, believed her.

Because of this, Aria wanted to make a good impression in school. She had thrown together a decent outfit that morning including; a grey Mickey Mouse sweater with a red tank top underneath, blue skinny jeans, a black knit beanie, and yellow converse. Her long red hair was curled under her beanie and she twirled it around her finger as she hummed along to her music. Her almost unnatural green eyes were closed and her long mascara-covered eyelashes were grazing her cheek. Her make-up for that day was simple; black eyeliner, black mascara, concealer, and her signature hot pink lip gloss.

The bus stopped. Aria looked up to see a boy her age with shaggy black hair and piercing blue eyes. She was mesmerized by the color of the boys eyes. They didn't quite go with the bad boy exterior he had. A tight red tee shirt covered by a leather jacket with black skinny jeans and black converse. He had his headphones in, his backpack slung over one shoulder, and a bad attitude. His eyes met hers and the boy fell over into the seat where Aria had been sitting. She pulled her headphones out. She couldn't tell why. This guy screamed bad news to her.

"You okay?" She asked, genuinely worried for some unknown reason.

"Yeah I'm fine." He looked at her and gave her a half smile that would've made any other girl on the bus melt but it had no effect on her. He seemed rude, giving Aria no thank you in response to her unneeded kindness. And by the looks he was receiving from the other girls on the bus, this guy was a player.  She wasn't about to let another boy in. Never again. Especially a gorgeous player such as him.

There was an awkward silence between the two as Aria put her headphones back in. She leaned her head back against the seat and closed her eyes.

"What are you listening to?" The boy asked curiously. Aria wondered why this kid even cared. She was the new girl and he was a player. Not a good mix.

She answered him reluctantly, "Uh, Demons by Imagine Dragons." The boys beautiful blue eyes widened. He unlocked his phone and showed her the screen. He was listening to the same song. She smiled a little, the sun catching her eyes, causing them to sparkle.

"What's your name?" She asked.

"Damian, Damian Jason. You'll wanna know that for later." He winked and slipped something into her hand. He got up and moved to another seat with a friend of his. She looked down at the piece of paper he left and written on it was; "Call me sometime so you can see where my demons hide." His number was scrawled below.

It was official, Aria Emerson did not want anything to do with Damian Jason.
