Chapter 2
"Show me your I.D." I stopped and pulled out my I.D. an showed it to the guard. "Sego I'm pretty sure you know who I am so why do you have to ask me this every time I leave the city?" Sego checked my I.D. and said "Come on Kukui you know exactly why ever since we found that mortal wandering near our boundaries we've had to tighten security measures. Now state your business." I rolled my eyes. I couldn't believe my best friend was doing this to me. "Hunting." "For?" "Food, now will you let me leave already?" Sego knew what I was hunting for he just likes giving me a hard time. "Alrighty then you may leave but, I need a finger print before you leave and also when you get back." I groaned and let him cut my finger for the print. "This is the only thing I don't like about this job." he said disgustedly as he watched my jade blood drip onto the paper. "What!? you don't like seeing my blood?" I sneered at him while wiping my blood on his nose. "Oh shut up and go find us some dinner." Sego said while rubbing my blood off his nose "fine but if I don't come back with anything it's because you made me late and the animals all went into hibernation." winter is always the hardest season on our people. It's the only time we wish we weren't immortal. "So you'll find us food like you always do." Everyone in our city believes in me way to much, I mean I guess it's good that I'm one of the only well respected women in my city.
When runners are about five we are sent to an evaluation. Girls and boys have different ones they go to. So when my evaluation came I was tested on many different things. There was an obstacle course (which I completed easily) and they tested how well each of us would be able to be a mother. You see not all women are allowed to have children, and if they are then they have to have several (my mother had three girls and five boys). I completely failed at motherly tasks but since I did so well on the obstacle course and some other survival challenges they made the amazing decision to put me with the boys (who had more challenges on survival) and I also exceeded their expectations and kicked all the boys asses so they immediately put me in a training camp (for men) and now I'm the youngest most successful hunter in our city. Oh and did I mention I'm the only girl hunter to? So I've got a lot riding on me.
