I close the door to my apartment building with a loud echoing bang. I cringed as the sound echoed throughout the building. That must have at least scared one person out of their wits. I walked past my unit and went up to the second floor to ring on Ms. Kenner's doorbell, twice. My Mom and Ms. Kenner have been friends since before I was born. That's one reason she decided to move into the same apartment building we lived in. To stay connected. Because of that I also consider her like my aunt and call her by her first name, Mary. The deal is every day when I come back from school I ring the doorbell twice so she knows I got home safely. I'm not sure why this rule was made, considering I could just text my Mom and all would be fine, except Mary always says she feels responsible for me in some ways so she'd like to know when I get home. After I pressed the doorbell twice I ran back down the stairs and went into my apartment. It's very quiet, like always. I put my backpack on the floor and kicked off my shoes. I walk into the living room and flop onto the couch, reflecting on my day. It wasn't really the best. I embarrassed myself during Math class. I've never understood math, and I've basically always been behind or slower than the rest of my classmates. I've never told anyone about my terrible math skills except to Harper Belle, my best friend. I even felt embarrassed telling her, and we tell each other everything.

My thoughts leave me and I look around my home in silence. It's your basic small apartment, a tiny kitchen, a living room, a dining room that's attached to the living room, two small bedrooms and a for some reason pretty big bathroom. Me and my Mom decorated it as well as we could to make it homey, and to be honest I think we succeeded. We have a nice couch, a fuzzy rug, a wooden dining table. It's not the smallest thing ever, it's just right for two people to live in comfortably.
I get up from the couch and take my phone out from my jean pocket to text Harper. She quickly replied. I read her text message, and immediately rushed into my bedroom.
Me and Harper both are home alone everyday after school. So, to keep from being bored we always meet at the train station nearest to my house and go to malls or a cafe to hang out. My Mom and Mary don't know about this, and Harpers parents also don't know. I always need to make sure I'm home before six so I get home before Mom does. I opened the window that was across from my bed just enough so I can crawl through and get my bag that I always have filled with the things I need when I leave the house. In it I simply have a sweater and some money. I open my closet and grab a random pair of sneakers and put them and my backpack on. Quickly and silently I crawl out the window to go meet Harper.
I wonder what we'll encounter today.
