Chapter 13

The Letter 

My eyes started burning and tearing up.

"Please just tell me."

"Maddie please just tell me." She loosened her grip and let go of my hand.

"Tara he is in a coma."

I didn't know what to say, I've lost all hope in this world. I turned to my side and wished this was all just a bad dream.

"There is one more thing I have to give you."

I turned back around and looked up at her red face.

"Here." She handed me a letter.

"He told me not to tell you anything just to give this to you.

I opened it and it read.

"Dear Tara,
I'm sorry I cant be there for you. I'm not going to be in the country by the time you read this. I'm sorry about your brother, the doctor said that there is little to no chance of him surviving. We can decide if you want to pull the plug as soon as I am back.

I wish I could tell you where I was  but I cant its only for your safety.  I will be back in about a month, im sorry I couldn't say goodbye but I had to leave immediately. Leo will have a car com pick you up in about a week you wont be staying with him though.

You will be staying in a pent house and I will meet you there when I get done with business. I love you Tara I really do but I have to get this done.

I slowly folded the letter back up and slipped it back into the envelope.

"Well he is gone." I turned to the side

Maddie looked at my and started rubbing my back.

"It's going to be okay." She said grabbing my hand.

I turned towards her.

"Can you stay with me please, I don't want to be alone for a month."

"Of course, especially not on your birthday." She smiled.

"Thank you." I gave her hand a squeeze.

"What about James?" I looked down.

"Just think of it Tara, there is a chance." She said wiping tears and trying to smile.

"So im going to go get some food and ill be right back." She hopped off the bed and spun around on her heels.

"Might be best if you wear shoes." We both laughed.

She threw on her shoes and jogged out. And here I am waiting for somebody to break the silence. But I know it's not going to happen.

I decided to doze off and I woke back up 30 minutes later.

"Hey." Maddie said poking my shoulder.

"Finally."  I sat up and she placed a box of pizza onto my lap.

"wow." She smiled.

"Don't tell the nurses, you aren't supposed to be eating this stuff. We both laughed.

We just sat there and talked and ate after a while.

"Do you want me to stay?"

"Only if you want to."

"Of course I do, Ill sleep on the pull out bed.

She pulled out the bed and laid down.

"Goodnight."

"Goodnight."
