My alarm blared loudly, making me sit up quickly and press snooze. I tend to stop my alarm fairly quickly, trying not to wake any of my sisters up, since I wake up 30 minutes before anyone else. My phone buzzes before I can lay back down. I check it, knowing what it says. It's a text from my boyfriend, Kaysen.
"Good morning babe ❤️"
This has become a normal routine. I text him back, not putting a lot of though into the text. I've realized I've kind of lost feelings for him. We'd been dating for about 4 months, but we were best friends before. Everyone wanted us to just date already, so I feel like we had to.
Wincing at the sunlight shining brightly through my window, I put down my phone, clearing my thoughts. I'd talk to Sarah about it when I get to school. I decide pick out an outfit for today. I put on my skinny jeans and my gray t-shirt. I put on my black Converse high tops, and walk groggily downstairs.
I walk into the bathroom, looking at my reflection in the mirror. I brush my teeth and brush my long brown hair. My pale skin doesn't have much acne, but the dark circles under my eyes are quite noticeable. I put a little foundation and mascara.
My sister Avery is the first to wake up. She's about 8, with brown hair. She walks into the kitchen where Mom is making pancakes for all of us. Getting ready is usually quite stressful in the mornings, since Mom gets stressed very easily. Since we've been living on our own, she's having to do everything.
"Alexis, make sure Ally gets up on time today," my mom says.
Ally is around 11, with short brown hair and waking her up for school is a chore. I go to her room and rip the covers off her bed, making her wake up.
We catch the bus by 7:00 am, my sisters heading to their elementary school, while I ride to Lone Pine High School. The bus ride is about 45 minutes. I shrink into my seat, listening to music with my headphones in.
I walk into the gym at school, greeting my friends. I sit up at the top of the bleachers where we usually do. My friends were having their own conversation about some guy that winked at my friend Charlie, the blonde of our group. She tends to be a little on the bad girl side, and we're not really close friends.
"Who winked at her?" I ask my friends.
"Nothing," Charlie and Katie said. Katie is the mean one of the group. They are best friends and they don't go anywhere without each other.
I decided to block out the rest of the conversation they were having. I saw Elliot yelling threats at Tyler Jones, the jock. Elliot had a huge crush on him, and she thinks threatening to punch him in the throat is flirting. Fallon, on the other hand, acts like a total idiot to try to flirt with boys. I find myself not trying to be a part of the conversations we have lately. I see Sarah walk in the gym, her eyes frantically trying to find me. I had sent her a text on the bus, telling her I needed to talk to her.
"Alexis! What's going on?" asks asks me.
"Uhh, I've been thinking about Kaysen and me," I answer, "I've just like lost all feelings for him really."
"Are you going to break up with him?" she asks. I can talk to Sarah about everything. She's pretty chill about things around school.
"I don't know," I say honestly, "I mean, he still really likes me, but I miss being just friends."
"Then just break up with him, and tell him you want to be friends," Sarah said. The teachers were calling the top row of the bleachers to go to home room. I thought about what she said. It seemed like a pretty good idea, being friends with Kaysen again. I mean, I'm a sophomore, it's not like my relationships are really serious right now.
