Mae froze as the crackling of leaves broke the silence behind her. Her breath caughted raggedly and she stepped back, right into the chest of the body.
She felt the ribs snap like pencils and little insects crawling all over her sneakers and legs. The smell intensified, flies bursting into the air and swarming into Mae's face.
Mae yelped and fell backwards, one of her splayed hands smashing into the body's face, her finger going into the socket. Pus seeped up and spilled over the edges like milky tears.
The rustling returned, and Mae jumped up and turned, her eyes scanning the shadows, in vain.
Two pin points of light shone directly at her, burning directly into her eyes from above, twin balls of horror staring into her soul.
Mae turned and ran.
Everything rushed behind her and was forgotten, her friends, the body, the monster, into the black blur of trees. Mae's ragged breathing interrupted the quiet of the forest, her footsteps pounding the dead leaves. Roots were reaching out of the ground like vengeful corpses, thorns like spiny fingers threatening to snag her clothes.
She heard pounding footsteps behind her, threatening to trip her. She glanced behind her, and nothing was there, and the footsteps had vanished, and she faced forward again and crashed into a tree, the outward sticking branches scratching her face and arms and making holes through her shirt.
She fell to the ground and lay there in pain, and looked around again.
The eyes.
They were there. Looking at her.
Like cat eyes on the road, looking directly at her, in the shadows cast from the forest, just out of the moonlight.
Staring.
Time and thoughts froze, and her brain wiped of any emotion other than fear.
She slowly rose up, not taking her gaze off those eyes, which didn't move, but still seemed to follow her.
She turned and ran.
