I arrived at the restaurant Sophie and I were meant to meet Mr Johnson-the client-. The restaurant was a high class restaurant in our town.
Only the créme de la créme of the society dined here. So obviously the man was a high class man.
I entered the restaurant and met a waitress. She looked me up and down with disdain.
I already knew the reason it was because of Kevin. I really didn't understand why people actually looked at me with disdain and scorn. I get it is because of me being a young single mother. But it's not like I'm the only young single mother in the world.
"Table for two" she asked looking as if she could be anywhere right now than to attend to me.
"No" I told her grinning at her " I'm here to see Mr Johnson. I guess he has a reservation"
Immediately she heard Mr Johnson she visibly gulped and nodded hurriedly and gave me a bright smile. Well I could see that her smile was fake.
I wondered who actually this Mr Johnson was, for her attitude had taken a 360 degree turn.
"This way please" she said in a sweet voice
She led me to the back of the restaurant were people couldn't really see. It was as if she had led me to a different place entirely.
If I thought that the main restaurant was classy then this place was above classy.
There were few people dining here. The place was just magnificent.
The waitress led me to a table and I noticed that the table was empty. I seems Mr Johnson was yet to arrive.
The waitress dropped the menu and asked if I would like anything. I just told her that it will be great of she could get me a high chair for Kevin to sit on.
I sat down and put Kevin on my lap. I looked at him to check how his reaction would be to this place.
And he's reaction was how I thought it will be. He looked round with his big blue eyes and he cowered with fear. He pressed himself into my body.
The thing about Kevin was that anytime he was in a new place especially with people he has never seen before he tended to be scared or afraid. I didn't really know why he always did that.
The waitress came back with the high chair and left.
I carried Kevin and strapped him to the high chair. He made a fuss but at the end of the day he succumbed.
As I sat down back I heard a male voice from behind me.
"Hello, you must be Kayla Anderson" the guy said.
I quickly stood up and turned I saw an older man. He should be in his late fifties-early sixties.
His eyes held a gleam. His hait was practically silver.
"Good afternoon sir" I quickly said as I put my hand out to shake him.
"I am William Johnson" He said as he shook my hand.
He sat down on a chair and gestured for me to do the same thing. I sat down and heard a little voice call me.
I turned to look at Kevin. Am sure it was because he saw Mr Johnson that he called out to me.
It was then Mr Johnson noticed that there was someone else on the table apart from the both of us.
"And who is this little man" He said looking Kevin. Who in turn cowered back in his seat.
I unstrapped Kevin from the high chair and put him in my lap.
"This is my son Kevin" I replied "Am sorry that I didn't tell you that I was bringing someone with me"
His eyes widened just like how every other person had when they figured that Kevin was my son.
"Your son" He inquired "But I dont see any ring on your finger"
Another thing people were bound to ask Are you married???? Or something along those line.
I gulped and answered him "No I'm not"
I'm sure he noticed that I was feeling quite uncomfortable.
"Oh I'm sorry if I asked something too personal" Mr Johnson told me looking at me with his dark eyes " And it's no problem if you bring your son with you"
I stared at him and smiled. I notice he didn't judge me for being a single mother not like what other people have done.
"So Mr Johnson-"
I didn't get to finish y statement because he interupted me.
"Call me William" He smiled at me.
"Okay" I said nervously opening my bag to bring out the documents/pictures of the reunion will be.
I placed the documents on the table and immmediately Kevin dragged it. Just as I noticed that he had taken it, I took it back from him.
I gave him a look that told him to behave. And he hid his face in my chest. I knew he was going to sleep off. But I guess it was best for all of us.
I think I should just have left him with the old lady who lived opposite me and helped me take care of him when the babysitter couldn't come just like today.
"He reminds me so much of my grandson" Mr Johnson said smiling at the both of us "They are always a handful"
"Yeah I guess they are" I replied as I; placed the document carefully back on the table. "I'm sorry Sophie can't make she had work to do"
"There's no problem at least one of you came" He smiled at me.
It seemed this man likes smiling. And I must say he had a beautiful smile.
I showed him the pictures of the theme and stuff. And he chose the one he liked the most.
But he said he wasn't sure if his wife would like what he chose. So we decided to set another meeting but this time with his wife and probably his daughter.
He told me about his family and anytime he spoke he had this twinkle in his eyes. He loved his family very much.
That is why he decided to do this reunion because he wanted to be with his family again.
Most of his children weren't leaving around. They lived in different states and even countries.
The reunion wasn't only for his nuclear family but also for his extended family. He wanted all his brothers and sisters with their family be together again.
I guess Mr William Johnson was a big family man.
After our discussion we had lunch and made plans of when and where to meet again.
As I left the restaurant I thought about how lucky Sophie and I were to get his deal. And how Mr Johnson was'nt how I expected him to be. I expected a very snobbish and arrogant person but I met a very humble and down to earth Man.
I wondered how the meeting with his wife and daugther would go.
But first Sophie and I needed to celebrate our very first big client.
