Joey

The buzz of my phone yanked me from consciousness, and for one second I felt hopeful that it was Tucker.  Then I remembered.  She was gone, and the ache in my heart matched the ache in my head.  I sat up and swung my legs to the floor of my truck.  Sooner or later I was going to have to find a more permanent sleeping arrangement.

My phone buzzed again.

Reluctantly, I answered the call.

“Have you finished considering it?”

Dammit.  Would her voice every stop making my heart drop like that?

“The wedding is at St. Angus’s.”

“I remember.”

“So you’ll come?”

I sighed.

"I'll come,” I said. “I’m not sure I’ve got much less to lose.”

"Thank you."

She hung up, and I put my head on the dash.
