A/N: Be forewarned! I'm not sticking to the original plot! I'm going to have more trips to the Upside Down, have less SteveXNancy action more JonathanXNancy action, and I'm not going to kill off certain characters that die on the show. Also the majority of this work will be from the P.O.V of Nancy but only sometimes will I use another characters.

Who knows maybe I'll keep Barb alive...

Here we go!

"You don't get it. He's not like that." I said softly, twirling the baby blue cord in my hand as I waited for Barb's, no doubt, differing retort. The bed frame creaked and moaned as I shifted my weight and pulled the phone's mouthpiece closer to my lips.

"Nancy, how naive are you? People like Steve.. they don't appreciate people like us. They only want one thing and one thing only."

"People like us?"

"You know! People with a brain. A personality. Things people like Steve Harrington don't have." I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Barb couldn't be more wrong. She doesn't know him like I do... He's different.

"You sound like my mom." I whispered.

"Oh so your mom knows!" She said with a laugh.

"No.. Of course not! She would kill me!"

"You know who you should really be sucking tongues with?"

"Barb! Gross!" I scowled and propped my chin on my arm.

"Billy Gretchen! He's number one in our class and.. he's easy on the eyes.." She said in an enticing tone.

"Billy? The one who always chews on his pencil during calculus?"

"That's not that ba-"

"The one who was found in his car with his- "

"Okay okay! I forgot about that! Maybe not Billy, but honestly Nance you can do so much better than Steve. Has he even called you yet? Like he said he would?" I released a heavy sigh and flopped back onto my pillow. I was about to reply when my door swung open revealing a smiling Dustin with a large pizza box in his hand and a toothless grin on his face. I lifted my head and raised an eyebrow.

"Hey Nancy. There's a slice left if you want it." He opened the box and announced "Sausage and pepperoni."

"Hang on Barb." I sighed into the phone and placed it face down onto my comforter. With a smile on my face I hopped out of bed and shut the door, watching his face disappear from my vision. I wish Mike would keep his friends downstairs. Who knows they might tell mom about Steve and me. I can't risk that.

I flopped onto the bed and grabbed the phone.

"Barb? You still there?" I asked but was immediately met with the incessant beeping of the dial tone. I groaned and placed the phone back onto it's base. I stared up at the ceiling and couldn't help but feel a little depressed. I didn't know why. I had the most popular guy in school begging at my doorstop, I'm doing great in school, and although Barb isn't on my side now I know she'll come around sooner or later. So why was there a burning knot in my throat threatening to cause a waterfall of tears.

I pushed off of my bed and stood in front of the window watching Mike's friends take off down the street on their bikes. I gently touched the cold windowpane and watched the dark trees from across the street ominously swaying against the navy sky. I was about to turn away when I saw the briefest movement behind the thin trunks of the trees. I narrowed my eyes and leaned forward, my nose pressing against the glass. I held still and watched, waiting for movement, but there was none. I shook my head and fell down against the bed. Great. Now I'm seeing things.
