Our story begins in the depths of a forest just off the outskirts of town. Resting alone just a hilltop behind a river was the mansion of Linda and George Darwin, a couple in their mid-thirties--and the prime of their lives. George was the son of an eccentric multi-trillionaire scientist, and on his way to becoming one himself. As such, the couple was rich and took pleasure in spoiling themselves, be it through always eating at the finest establishments, hosting house parties, and going on wickedly expensive vacations. With no bratty children to attend to, butlers that they can pay to do just about anything they need, and a world of isolation, the Darwins had it made.

Until one fateful day: March 3rd, 1989.

Linda was sitting out in her front yard, which had just been freshly mowed by their head maid. The day had mostly been sunny up until this point, but the dark clouds of a thunderstorm were starting to roll in. Suddenly, she spotted a small black car driving up to their mansion. It was labeled as that of a state police department. From the car came a police officer and another man.

"How may I help you, officer?" Linda asked, walking towards the car as it pulled over. Her husband walked outside at that moment with their dog, and noticed the car as well.

The man pulled out some papers, and asked in reply, "This the Darwin residence?"

"Why, yes, it is," George answered somewhat snarkily, walking to his wife's side. "What do you want?"

"Reports here say that you've fallen behind on your monthly mortgage payments," the man replied, scuffling through the papers. "You've missed four payments, and as such you're being charged for one thousand dollars on penalties and needing to make up for your payments."

Linda took a step closer, now standing right in front of the mortgage worker's face. "Oh, how silly of us," she said sarcastically. She then turned around and told her husband, "George, go get five hundred dollars. That should be enough to keep this man satisfied." The Darwins were never a fan of paying mortgages or taxes, and they typically used bribes or other "shady tactics" to stay off the radar so they could keep most of their riches for themselves.

This time, however, the mortgage worker was unphased. "Ma'am, bribery is not going to work on me. It's either you pay up or we evict you."

Both Linda and George scoffed. "You can't take our house!" George exclaimed.

"Sir, that's what happens when you fall behind on monthly payments."

"Not to mention, considering we also have reports of you two committing fraud on numerous occasions and have been dodging insurance payments for the last fourteen years, we have the authority to arrest you," the police officer added.

This news terrified George. Linda, on the other hand, was giving both men a threatening look. "I'm afraid that that won't be necessary," she growled, reaching into her pocket.

"Linda, honey, now is not a good time to-" George tried to talk his wife out of it, but Linda had already made up her mind. She pulled out a small pocketknife.

The mortgage worker bolted on the spot. The officer, out of instinct, grabbed his gun and fired a few bullets at Linda. Linda rolled out of the way just in time, but this unfortunately meant that the bullets all hit George. Two hit him in the chest and one hit him in the stomach. He was dead before he even hit the ground. Linda glared at the officer, raw anger and insanity shining in her eyes. This time, the officer shot at Linda three times, ultimately killing her.
