The big snow storm of 1967 I think it may have been in January of 1967. The crippling blizzard shut the city of Chicago down. The whole city came to a stand still in the matter of maybe 12 hours or less. There was snow everywhere. The whole world at that time to a 12 year old looked very very white! I remember snow covering doorways and roofs had inches of snow piled high on them. We couldn't go out our front door as there was snow blocking the exits. My dad and uncle went crazy looking for shovels in our basement. At first we thought they were out in the garage where they were normally kept during the winter months. After some scrambling around in the basement they found two shovels that haven't been put to use yet. I remember my uncle trying to push the screen door open and pushing the snow away from the door. It was amazing watching two grown men struggling to get the snow away from the screen doors so we could go out of the house. It took several hours to dig little pathways in the front of the house as well as the side. The snow drifts were taller than my dad and uncle. Seemed like they tunneled to the garage and to the main street out in front of the house. Once the paths were shoveled so one could walk on them, my uncle decided to take his video camera and see what the neighborhood looked like. He made his way to 63rd street which was about a half a block from our house only to find a city bus totally covered with snow as well as several cars underneath snow. There was no way to tell where the street was or the sidewalks were. It was like that for several weeks. I believe we were out of school for about three weeks after the blizzard. I also remember it being the coldest winter that year too! For what seemed to be forever no one could go shopping, or to work, or to school. There was a lot digging for days. The snow was really soft at first it was so easy to fall into it and usually someone had to pull you out. I don't think I have ever seen a snow storm like that since and I don't want to neither.
