Chapter 2
The drive to school had one of the most awkward silences I’d had yet. Mum never said a word, not goodbye, nothing. Not a glance. We may as well not have been there.
We got out the car, and mum immediately drove away. I gave Nadine a wide-eyed shrug and picked up my green and purple leafed-patterned school bag. Nadine had tied her hair in a messy bun, eye liner enhancing her already huge blue eyes (Like mine) and little foundation.
“My hair look alright?” She asked, fiddling with it.
“Yeah, mine?” Mine was down and straight. I had a big dark brunette (practically black) side fringe and layered hair below my chest. I loved it.
“Always.” And that was it for our conversation. She stalked right, me left. I saw Emma waiting by the gates, with Ben and Alec. I liked Alec, and yeah ok, he was my cute popular boyfriend. Brunette hair, tall, smart. But honestly? We were just failing. And I liked him, as a friend.
“Emma!” I shouted across the road. She saw me, and we ran and hugged each other tightly.
“Heya! Omg, my hairs a mess today… Check me!” Emma turned around. Her blonde hair was in a high bun. Make-up black and foundation covered. She didn’t need it, she was beautiful.
“Em, you look fantastic. You always do” I winked, and relieved, she lent back and held bens hand. After my realisation of how I felt about Alec, I just awkwardly glanced at him. He noticed, but played along and held my hand. We walked silently to form.

“Zach Alan.”
“Here miss.”
“Eric Bennett.”
“Here miss.” The register blended into the background as Emma hid her phone behind her bag and showed me ‘misery business’ by Paramore. I drifted with the song thinking about Cameron. He was a year above me, and from the moment I laid eyes on him I fancied him. Big time. I’d been talking to him on face book for the past month, and we had everything in common. Everything. But he always had a girlfriend and I have Alec. Not that Cameron is interested in me anyway. Sammy nudged me. “What?” I hissed, pulling the earphones out.
“Miss Leroy? When you have quite finished listening to banned electrical equipment a ‘Here miss’ would be nice.” Damn, caught by the teacher already.
“Yes, sorry.”
“Miss.” She demanded. I was getting annoyed. So I shrugged and turned away.
“Excuse me Hayden but I want respect. And at the moment in the form of ‘Yes Miss.’ I will not tolerate ignorance like that.”
“Yes, Miss.” Miss Matthew held her hand open, palm up. I scowled and handed her Emma’s phone. ‘Sorry’ I mouthed. She tutted but otherwise didn’t seem that angry with me. Phew, I wasn’t up for an argument with Emma today. We got handed our maths pop quiz and I sighed as I saw the first question. Emma lent over.
“Right so, Saturday still on?” I racked my mind to find what that was, and nodded.
“Well it’s definitely gonna be our night. After the Indian and everything. I’ve been ready for a while now.” She continued. Ah, now I remember. Our day out then camping in her field. She was still going on.
“And you and Alec too. To think of it, none of us will be virgins by Sunday!” Crap.
“Em, about me and Alec-”
“Hayden.” Miss warned.
“Talking bout the work miss…. Yeah so 6x+17=43 means that x=6.” I’d made that up, and I knew it was wrong. I sighed, my confidence to tell her my feelings ran away. And the chance didn’t appear again until last lesson.
