~The Coconut Tree~

I once was a boy

Wild and free

Who'd make believe

All the wonderful things

I could be

One who could not be stopped

By a scrape of the knee

As I dreamed of climbing

The coconut tree

I was a blind young man

For I could not see

All the love I left behind

When I left for the sea

Maybe if I'd known

How she truly felt about me

I wouldn't be here on my own

Beneath this coconut tree

I was a lost man

Nearly five past thirty

I had little time and no patience

For much other than money

As my youth departed so too

Left my heart for the sea

The gales against the sails

Had paled to monotony

I was a cold man for I'd known

That I had lost what I'd meant to be

Strife smothered my ambition

As life happened to me

Though a sailor I was no longer

Captain of my destiny

So I drifted, stiff and still

'Til I found this old coconut tree

Now an old man my eyes have darkened

And my heart may finally peer

And sing in whispers

A song of sorrow

For the wrong that led me here

When I left her on the pier

I left behind a part of me

Now, with much unatoned

I'm carried home

By the soft scent of the sea

Alas my last breath is drawn

Beneath the coconut tree
