So, this might sound like one of those clown stories someone would post on the internet to get attention. Well this is real. Im Jake, I am 20 years old and currently attending the University of Duke, and this is the story on how the clowns haunted me for 12 years of my life. . .

It all started when I was 7. Yes this was way before the clown trend. It was early May, 2003. I was all pumped up cause my birthday party was just getting started and grandma Jean got me a new set of basketball cards. That's when I heard the squeaking and horns as the clowns came through the gate into the backyard. Like I said, this was before clowns started roaming around with weapons and scaring people in the middle of nowhere. And I was 7, I still thought girls had cooties.

There was three clowns. One was very short and puny, there was another one that was short, but he looked very muscular. But the third one creeped me out the most. He was about average height, and seemed to be in his mid to late 20's, with a deep, but quiet voice. We were just getting ready to pass out cake and the first two clowns were busy entertaining everyone that came up to them but the third one came straight to me and said, "You must be the birthday boy, I'm Billy" and I just nodded my head and said hi. I usually love clowns, but I knew this one was creepy. He noticed I was a little creeped and he called the kids over and we ate cake and opened the rest of the presents.

After the pinata and the clowns did their tricks, I wasn't so creeped out, but I thought that too fast. As the kids were leaving, all of the clowns came over to me and the first clown said " We will cherish this day forever, all four of us," and they were gone. Out the gate and into there car.

The house was very quiet that night, but something made the house feel more occupied. But what I did not know, is that the clowns have the key to the very back gate of my backyard, and they were using it that instance.

One Year Later

My birthday, except this was just for family members. I was going to go to the movies with my friends and watch star wars, cause that was cool for 8 year olds to watch in 2004. So I was the youngest one at the party, all my cousins and siblings were older than me. I would be the only one entertained by a clown, but there was no clowns this year. That's what I thought. Right as we started singing happy birthday I hear a horn from the back gate, and I watch as three clowns come through and start singing with everyone else. But everyone stopped to the notice at how surprised and scared I looked. Then my mom spots them and she looked just as surprised as me. I figured it was a surprise from her or dad but they didn't understand. The clowns approached me and said happy birthday to me. Everyone except my mom and dad were thinking they were supposed to be here. My older brother, Bill was entertained. He was only a year older than me so he was still interested in clowns. My mom looked very confused and was talking to my dad. It was just a repeat of last year, but everyone was way older. Everyone was gathered around the clowns laughing and enjoying themselves except for me.

At the end of the party the clowns came up to me and asked, "What's wrong with you, aren't you excited you finished your basketball card collection?" " Yeah, I guess." I muttered. They looked at each other, nodded and said " See ya soon, kid." as they walked through the back gate. I figured they would bust through the back gate next year during my birthday, but I was wrong. What I didn't know is that I would see them way sooner. In fact, I didn't know they came in my backyard every day in that year span and watched me sleep and listened to my plans. They were now surprising guests to the movie the next day.

I woke up not in the mood. I am usually a morning person but I woke up at 11:30, that's when my mom walked in and asked if I was feeling alright. I nodded and asked for a cup of orange juice. As she was in the kitchen, my brother walked in and asked if I were to take the challenge of a 1v1 on my mini basketball hoop. " I'm not feeling the greatest, but our dog can beat you so I accept what you like to call a challenge." I always beat him. I was getting out of bed and shooting some warm up's when mom walks in with my orange juice. " Thanks," I say as I take a sip. I didn't realize how dry my throat was until i noticed it was gone. " The movies starts at 1:00," my mom blurts " so make this fast." It will be fast alright I tell her as we check it up.
