I can hear Kiara's high pitched giggles, stifled by the thick wood of my closet. I am speedily jumping into my onesie and morphing into a gigantic monkey. My hand shoots toward my closet doors and I push them open quickly. The entertainment has arrived.
Kiara is grinning so widely, I am expecting her face to crack open. I start to jump and dance around her room, yelling out the lyrics of Summer Time from High School Musical. I reach out for Kiara's hand and we end up spinning, laughing, screaming and dancing, all at the same time.
When our lungs can't take the cardio anymore, we flop onto her bed. I reach out for my phone so we can listen to more music. We are both out of breath and don't want to move, so I put on an indie folk playlist to set a laid-back mood.
"This has been the best summer. I love that we got to spend so much time together!" I say. Kiara and I have been friends for only two years, but it seems like we've known each other for centuries. We've always stuck together, so without her in my life, it would be really tough to do anything alone.
Kiara turns her head and furrows her eyebrows in thought before she speaks. "Thank you lovely! The same goes for you, of course."
My fingers twitch and I know something is off with Kiara. The last time she was this quiet after one of our dance party sessions was before she blurted in a sob that her dog had died. When Kiara actually shuts up, you know something juicy is about to spill. I decide to make conversation until this news pops up.
"Aren't you stoked for grade eleven?" I ask my best friend. "Hopefully there's no drama we have to put up with this year." There is always some story floating around at our school about someone who is super popular and liked by everyone and we are supposed to care.
Kiara's emerald eyes pierce right through me at this exact second. "About school next year..." she is stalling, trying to postpone this climactic release of her news. "I won't be here for grade eleven. I'm moving away...permanently."~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
