Chapter 2
"Hey, Yamaguchi? Did you get what we needed?"
Hamacho yelled loudly from across the room before chugging his cask of who knows what. I shut the large steel door and walked toward the sound of his voice. I held out the strange talisman I was sent after and could hear Hamacho grin with delight.
"Well, the boss was right when he said you don't mess around... How many guards did you go through? Ten? Fifteen?"
"As many necessary, but you guys talking up this rock made me think there'd actually be some serious security. If this were really worth all the trouble there would've been at least twice as many guards."
He chuckled,
"You're never satisfied, are you Yamaguchi?"
"What can I say?"
I turned to my right and headed for the sleeping quarters lowering the hood of my cloak.
"I like a challenge."Five years have passed by since I left my home, and in that time the power of the demon has grown stronger and harder to control. In the time I've had alone I discovered my capabilities, ways I can use the demon's energy and magic to serve as my own, and also have discovered my limits. I can manipulate shadows and use them in a way that grants me a new kind of "sight". It's not much, but using the magic I can outline shapes, somewhat recognize people, and for the most part, avoid running into something. Having a demon trapped inside me surprisingly has its perks as well. I've developed a tolerance to pain, weariness, and even certain emotions I can no longer experience. Of course, these are only perks when considering my new job; fetching powerful items or people so that this Guild can use them to their advantage. Not as glamorous as it sounds, sadly. I've been a part of Phantom Scale for nearly a year. It started off as a simple band of thieves and bandits, only a few of them actually being able to do magic, but now it's grown into something much stronger. The now ring-leader, Omen, had recruited me and several other strong Mages before he "dethroned" the previous headmaster of Phantom Scale.
At first, our goal as a Guild seemed simple, get by any way we can while getting rid of those in our way. But not too long ago Omen returned to the Guild claiming he knew the secret to eliminating the world's problems, and somehow got everyone on board with his plan. Except me, because I know better than to trust someone claiming to be the "messiah to the new age of magic". Omen is probably just out of his mind, but with his newfound obsession, I've had more jobs and more things to do in my spare time. So once again I can't complain much.
I sat on my bed thinking and daydreaming when I heard someone sounding a gong. Which could only mean that we were meeting to discuss something important? I began to put my hood up again, but I then realized that my braid had come undone. I unraveled it all the way and figured I could rebraid it during the meeting. I stepped outside the quarters and turned down the hall before reaching the large room where we normally discussed.
"Yamaguchi, I was worried you would be uninterested in whatever we have to say, I didn't expect your haste..."
Omen hissed. I scoffed at him and sat down at the opposite end of a long, narrow table. It's hard to say that I'm not intimidated by Omen, after all, he's beaten me at my own game, fair and square, on several occasions. But it wasn't his strength or his aura that always put me off. It was the fact I had no idea what he looked like. I had at least some idea of every other person's appearance minus their hair color and things along those lines, but Omen, Omen was always changing. At one moment he would seem to be as tall as he was powerful, and other times he was like a muddled image, a smudged portrait. Not knowing what I was truly up against always set me on edge, which is one of the only reasons why I listened to anything he's ever had to say. He's not human. He couldn't be.
"My brothers, and sister, of course, I believe the time has come to reveal to you my plans for this world." Omen bellowed.
The others grumbled or whispered to each other while I began to braid my hair again while trying to listen intently.
"I have discovered a way to unlock a Mage's highest potential through the purest forms of energy and magic alike!" Omen's exclamation startled the room and caused a hush to rise over the whispers.
"I have been shown a way to grant unlimited power onto myself, and onto you all! Through a ritual lost to time and lost to the history of magic's origins, I can bestow onto this world a new era! An era in which the powerful will reign supreme!"
The Guild burst forward with cries and cheers followed by the crashing of casks and chugging. Omen sat down and observed the excitement, but I was anything but excited. I knew Omen was capable of taking over a Guild, or even taking over the strongest Guilds, but what he described sounded impossible.
"Ayako... You don't seem as ecstatic as everyone else, did my plans not meet your expectations?"
I turned toward his shifting figure.
"No, it's not that. I just don't see how you're going to unlock a dead magic."
I could feel his grin through the shadows, and his shape seemed to grow immensely. He rose up, towering above the crowd.
"That's where you come in, my dear... Hamacho, Kazuya, Flint, Ax, and of course you Aya, I have a special mission to send you on..."
Omen stood and began to leave the room with the rest of us in tow. He only called the strongest of us, so whatever mission he has in mind it must be challenging. We followed him to his private study where he shut and locked the door behind him before settling in.
"You're all probably wondering what I've got in mind for you."
