"Wait what?" Greta's voice rang down the phone line. Blurting out that Lex was in having a bone marrow aspiration and bone biopsy the moment she answered the phone probably wasn't the best idea. I had just been so overwhelmed by the sudden change in events that I had needed to get something out.

"Lex collapsed last night after you guys left." I looked at the clock on the wall in the waiting room. It was barely 8am. Kieran had left to get us coffee from starbucks because apparently he refused to drink, and let me drink something that resembled lukewarm dirty water. I'd since made a dirty water coffee, but it was sitting on the table, untouched.

"Wait, What?" She repeated. "Addie. I'm confused."

"He went all clammy and pale. Then collapsed. I thought he was dead." The words dried out my mouth. Thinking about last night again made me feel like I was back there. I shook my head, shaking the memory away.

"Why didn't you call? We would have come back." Greta exclaimed.

"Kieran was with me, and you guys had Lucian to take care of."

"So how is he now?" She whispered.

"His blood tests came back abnormal. The doctor thinks he might have leukemia."

"Cancer?!" She replied in disbelief.

Hearing the C word filled me with dread. It simply couldn't be true, Lex was the backbone of our group, the driving force... he was the leader... and he was and always would be the love of my life. The results would come back and he'd be fine. He was just worn out, the last few years had really taken it out of all of us. But what if I was wrong...

"I'm sure the tests are just a precaution." I replied, maybe if I said it enough I'd believe it.

"Well We're going to get the babysitter to come over and watch Lucian, we'll come to the hospital as soon as we can."

"You don't have to." I whispered.

"Uh, yeah we do. We're family." she replied her voice soft and full of love.

"Ok, See you in a bit." I replied automatically.

"Take care Addie." She murmured. "Love you."

"You too."

I pulled the phone away from my face and stared at it. I was going to have to call Dad and tell him we wouldn't be coming to see him yet. We'd planned to drive through in a few days, but it was going to have to wait until we new what was going on with Lex. I closed my eyes and let my head hang forward. He was going to be okay.

"I come bearing sustenance." Kieran's voice cut through the air. "Coffee and doughnuts."

"Thank you." I murmured, lifting my head. "I called Greta, her and Jed are going to come down."

"Okay." Kieran sat down beside me and placed the coffee tray and food box down on the table in front of us. "Any news yet?"

I shook my head. "Not yet."

At that moment the doors to our left swung open and the doctor that had wheeled tobias away for the aspiration walked back out into the waiting room. He smiled down and me.

I stood up. "All done?"

"Yes, I've just had him taken to a ward, We're going to keep him in another night."

I nodded, I had expected as much.

"Can we see him?"

The doctor nodded and led Kieran and I through the hospital and to Lex's room. He looked up at us as we walked in and a sleepy smile crossed his face. "I tried to tell em my hip wasn't a pin cushion.... But they didn't believe me."
