Dusk had barely broken on All Hallows' Eve when the first knock of the night sounded on the shop door. Per the usual, Henry had no candy, but he found it rude to ignore a knock. Slowly, he shut his book, and rose to his feet; his eyes brightening as he caught a glimpse of Detective Martinez on the other side. In one arm, she held a spotted dog (a toddler of about 18 months), and off to her left side, stood a charming little witch (whom Henry observed was approximately 5 or 6.)
"Detective.." he greeted.
"Who do we have here?"
He sunk down to his knees, and the witch buried her face sheepishly in the ruffles of Jo's tunic.
"This is Toby, and this..is Emma. My sister is stuck at work tonight, so she asked me to take them out," Jo smiled. She adjusted her grip on the little dog in her arms, before tucking a loose strand of hair behind the witch's ear.
Henry approached shy little Emma with gentle eyes, and a kind smile.
"Hello, little miss. I love your costume," he spoke. He offered her his hand, and she huddled closer to her Aunt.
"What do we say, Em'?" Jo asked.
"..Thank you," Emma murmured.
"You're quite welcome," he rose.
"I'm sorry I don't have any candy for you three.."
"No, it's okay. We're actually here to ask if you'd maybe like to join us," Jo admitted.
He arched his brows.
"Truly?" He stammered.
She nodded her head, and he cracked a small grin.
"I'd love to," he said.
"Hey, Abe!"
"Yeah?" He called.
"I'll be back in a few hours," Henry said.
"Why?? They find another bod.." he began. He reached the bottom step of the stairs, and was delighted to see Jo handing a bubbly toddler in a dog costume over to his father. "..Okay. Let me grab your coat," Abe grinned.
