I can hear the loud music blaring from the house next door. I glance out my bedroom window for the umpteenth time to see who is in there but no luck, the window in front of mine is still covered with a curtain.
The house next door had been lying vacant for almost a year now. The lady who lived there had been quite ill. I was really close to her as she loved me like a grandma.
Then one day a couple came to her house and took her out of town. They never came back. I assumed they must have been her children who took her to their place to take care of her.
I really miss her. She used to make chocochip cookies for me every weekend. We would sit in her patio every Sunday morning, eating brunch. She would tell me stories from her childhood. It was all really fascinating to me. The day she left without saying goodbye, I realised that she never talked about her family, her kids or grandkids.
Somewhere deep in my heart, I hoped that it was she who had come back. Although the lyrics of Closer that I could hear right now, did seem to say otherwise.
Oh baby, pull me closer in the backseat of your rover.. That i know you can't afford. Bite that tattoo on your shoulder.... Pull the sheets right off the corner of the mattress that you stole, from your roommate back in boulder..... We ain't ever getting older!
I kind of doubt that she listened to new age pop music. She was more of the country type. Well, atleast the new neighbours have good taste in music.
Hearing my favourite song play, I started to dance to the music. I was swaying around to the tune with my back to the window. It was late evening. So I decided to change into my night clothes. I removed my crop top while still dancing to the music. The song had now changed to Rihanna's Work.
I started to unbutton my skirt and slide it down, when I suddenly heard a whistle. Alarmed, I turned around to see that the window next door was no longer covered with a curtain. Instead there were two guys, who looked around my age, standing there grinning like idiots. Both of them looked exactly alike, wearing tank tops and with studs in their ears. The only thing that set them apart was the blue stripe of hair that the left one sported.
"Man! You alerted the birdie." The other guy said to the blue one.
My face started to flush. I suddenly felt glad that I was wearing a sports bra and shorts underneath my clothes." Her back was mesmerising. I couldn't control my testosterone. How else was i supposed to see her upfront?" The blue one smirked.
I suddenly snapped out of my trance and started towards the window, now annoyed by their presence. " What the hell do you think you are doing?? Peeking pervs! " With that I pulled the curtain on my window.
"Thanks. Now she's angry because of your catcalling." I heard one of them say.
"No, she's angry with you because you called her a birdie."
"Y/N, come downstairs." I heard my mom shout. I quickly threw a white shirt over my hot pink sports bra and cycling shorts. Then I ran downstairs to see what she wanted.
My mom was standing, holding a plate of cookies. She grabbed me by the arm and started to lead me outside. "Come, we have to go somewhere."
I started to follow her. "Where are we going?"
"To welcome the new neighbours to our city."
"What??"
Before I could protest any further, my mom had already rung their doorbell. The gate was opened within seconds by a lady in her 40s.
