"Oh Evangeline, innocent, sweet Evangeline." he traced his finger softly on her lips, teasing her slightly.
Evangeline was at a lost of words, as per usual whenever the bad boy was remotely near her. But this was the first time he had uttered her name. This was the first time he touched her. This was the first time he paid attention to the good girl. And just from that she got a surge of confidence.
Flint's stomach flipped in excitement. It was clear to him that he was going to take Evangeline's innocence. However she had something different in mind.
Even though she found it difficult, Evangeline pulled away. With one swift move, she climbed out the closet and slipped the key she had pinched from Flint's pocket (the key that Flint stole from the cleaner) into the key hole, locking the bad boy inside.
He couldn't believe what had just happened. The sweater wearing, school obsessed, uptight nerd freak had pick pocketed him and trapped him in a closet.
Evangeline laughed to herself. The whole scenario was hilarious to her. But she had laughed too soon. The door came crashing down as a result of the impact of Flint's strong kick.
He charged after her and expected her to run. Flint was fuming. If he was a cartoon character smoke would be terribly visible coming out of his ears.
However Evangeline stood confidently, her arms crossed and a smirk etched on her face. It was all an act. Evangeline was actually quite scared but she was a tough girl. She was certain that she could tame the bad boy.
"You think you're funny don't you." he bellowed, his fists clenched.
She resisted talking back to him. Her plan was to stand and not say a word. That way he'd get annoyed and leave and then she would win. She was scared of what he could do but wasn't scared of him.
"Speak up before I throw you in the closet. You can see how it feels." he grumbled, bending down so that he could make full eye contact with her.
Evangeline couldn't take it no more. She was urging to say something.
"One: the closet is clearly broken. And two: 'You can see how it feels' How ridiculous. You should see how it feels to be abused everyday, since that's what you do to most kids here at school." Evangeline spat. She couldn't control herself. She knew very well that she would regret everything she had done but she was in the moment. And she was ready for a fight.
To say Flint was taken aback is an understatement. However he made sure anger was only evident in his face.
For the first time in his life, his tongue was in a twist. He couldn't think of anything to say back. So he cursed at her and stormed off.
Evangeline was slightly proud of herself. But then the realisation hit her that she landed herself in some deep shit. However she knew how to fight, it was instinct as a result of her past. But that part of her past was buried deep within her and if anyone found out, her life would be over.
Flint had cooled himself off and made his way to the shabby little shack he called home. It was small but was enough for him and his mum and his little sister Yuri.
"I'm home." he called out but he very well knew there was no point to it. When he used to say that, his family would all come running to him and hugging him. But time has passed and everything is different.
It had been three years since the accident. Three years ago he had two twin baby brothers, two little sisters, a younger brother, a dad and a healthy mum. And three years later he only has a little sister and a disabled mum.
"Sit down and tell me about your day son." Flint's mum smiled warmly. She could barely breath, never mind speak, but it was all in love for her children.
"Have you heard of Evangeline Raymond?" he asked.
"Yes. She's head girl isn't she? And I've heard she's a very bright young woman." his mum answered.
"Well today she locked me in a closet." Flint chuckled. Thinking about it, he realised how funny it was.
"I really want to meet her. She seems like a hilarious lass." Janice, his mum laughed.
"And the thing that surprised me? She wasn't scared of me at all. She even made me at a loss for words." Flint honestly said. His mum was the only person he could talk too without being afraid of revealing too much.
"If she can shut that big gob of yours, she's a keeper. It would be nice to see you come home with Evangeline instead of those skimpily dressed girls." Janice sighed. It hurt her to see her son come home nearly every night with a different girl. And she couldn't stop him because she was stuck to her bed all day. In fact, she wasn't expecting him home straight after school that day. But she guessed that he came home because of Evangeline.
It had always been her dream to see her son get married before she died. She wanted to have grandkids and play with them despite the fact it was nearly impossible for her to do so. Janice was fighting to stay alive to see her only remaining children Flint and Yuri grow and become the people her and her husband always wanted them to be. And she was hoping that maybe Evangeline was the one to help Flint.
After pecking his mum on the cheek, he went up into his room and laid down on his bed, thinking. He rarely had the opportunity to press pause in his busy life. He rarely had the opportunity to just stop and think. Flint was always either partying, drinking, having sex or causing trouble.
"Me? And Evangeline? Impossible." he thought out loud to himself. How could that work? She was...she was...she was Evangeline Raymond! And he was Flint James! They could never be together. They were never going to be together. Not unless stereotypes vanished and the kids in school magically turned accepting.
And Flint thought he knew where his heart was, and it wasn't within Evangeline. It was in a girl who was broken. Tesla lived in a trailer park and had trouble with heroin. He only thought that anyways, he thought he loved her but if he did, why did he cheat on her nearly every night with a different girl each time? Still, he told her he loved her and she foolishly believed him. She was hoping he could fix her. And he was hoping he could.
But in a world where love, lust and sympathy is confused with each other, it was impossible for him to mend her.
