Shattering. The sound of shattering plastic and glass as the light switch sent waves of dark energy throughout the copper wiring of the building. Dark energy from a necromancer with a purpose. The surge of necromantic energy was so strong that the lights shattered, raining glass upon Lavender, Finnikin, and the Agents of D.C. in the room.
Lavender's eyes adjusted almost immediately, and she saw Finnikin frozen in the darkness. She pushed her friend along in the direction of the door. "Run, Finn. Run."
She heard the snap of bullets against the wall, but they were far enough away not to draw concern. Lavender pushed Finnikin again and then stopped running for a moment to whisper an incantation. Using the power of Necromancy, the mage summoned skeletal figures from wherever she could. Bony hands broke through the linoleum flooring and clawed their way into the room.
The thwaking of bullets grew closer to Lavender, and she even felt one whiz right by her head. A burning sensation accompanied that bullet, not the feeling of being grazed, rather something much worse. The telltale burn of witch hazel.
Lavender winced and began running after Finnikin again. She believed her gritty skeleton minions should be able to handle the humans with assault weapons, or at least buy her and Finnikin some time.
Looking ahead at Finnikin, Lavender saw him running around the scientists to try to get to the door. He had the phone held to his ear and an ice shield on his arm. As she continued to analyze, Lavender realized the scientists were moving toward the doorway, as if they knew exactly where Finnikin was trying to get to.
More gunshots rattled against Lavender's undead minions accompanied by the gut wrenching crunch of bone. Bullets and bone shrapnel ricocheted everywhere, further contributing to the mess of glass and other safety hazards.
How these humans were even hitting targets in the dark was beyond Lavender's comprehension, all she knew was that she needed to get Finnikin through that door, which was now being guarded by the human scientists.
Lavender steeled herself and charged forward through the room, jumping up over lab tables instead of taking the safe route around and behind them. "Finnikin you need to attack them!" she shouted. Ancient words began slipping from her lips as she recited another spell, hopefully more powerful than the last. A dark energy charge formed on the end of scythe as she swung it through the bullet spray. A final sweep of her scythe sent the dark energy radiating out at the armed Agents.
These Agents were not as swift as the last ones Lavender had battled. They did not see the energy attack coming toward them, let alone did they try to jump over it. The dark energy hit them like a wall, ceasing the gunfire and giving Lavender's skeleton minions time to climb over the militants and disarm them.
Satisfied in her work, Lavender turned to run to the control room again. Finnikin was still dodging around the scientists, unwilling to fight the 'defenseless humans.' Lavender's greatest issue with the situation, however, was that these humans were far from defenseless. They carried blades with them and while one guarded the door, the other actively slashed at Finnikin with their knife.
"Finn! You have to fight back!" Lavender commanded again. Even in the darkness she could see his face was white as a sheet. He couldn't do it, she deduced. No matter how much danger he was in, he would not harm another living person. She needed to take matters into her own hands.
Turning her scythe in her hands, the young necromancer soldier made steady progress toward her friend and the scientists. As she ran, Lavender began to cast another hex. This time the spell was directed at the scientists. She almost finished the spell as she passed one of the lab tables, but she was interrupted by a sudden sound to her right.
