When I woke up the next morning, Harry was silently sleeping on the couch, curled up in his blanket. I looked at the thermostat, realizing it wasn't even on. It was below forty degrees in my house and I hadn't even noticed. I quickly turned the heat up, and went to check on Charlie. He was sleeping in his crib, not affected by the coldness in the house. I smiled, covering him up a bit more, and then headed back into the living room.
"It's freezing in here." I jumped, turning around to see Harry rubbing his eyes, and pulling the blanket up to his chin. "I'm sorry, the heat wasn't on when I woke up this morning." I said quietly, pulling my arms across my chest. "You're only wearing a tank top and boxers." A smug smile covered his face. "I know that." I replied, feeling uncomfortable. "And you aren't cold?" He asked me, cocking his head to one side. "Not a bit.' I said, sitting on the couch across from him. He paused for a moment before lifting his eyebrows and sighing. "Weird." He sat up, stretching his arms. His biceps flexed, and I raised my eyebrows, impressed. "I workout when I can." He said, standing up. "Where's the bathroom?" He asked me, cuddling into himself as he shivered. "Down the hall and to the right." I said, watching him walk that way.
Charlie woke up with a smile and some giggles, happy that it was morning and that I was home. "Good morning, Bub!" I said as I turned on the light and went to his dresser to get him dressed. "Are you ready to get up?" I asked him. "Yeah.. Who's that?" He said soflty and tiredly. I turned around to see Harry in the doorway. "Oh, um.. This is Harry. He stayed with us last night." I said, picking out something warm for him to wear. "Mommy's friend?" He asked me, lifting his arms for me to pick him up. "Aunt Ara's friend." I smiled at him sadly. He didn't know his family yet.
"Why doesn't he know who his mum is?" Harry asked, his raspy accent curious. "How do you know he doesn't?" I turned to face him, shocked. "Because you just said it." He said, raising an eyebrow. "Oh.. Right.. Well, his mother died during his birth, and my brother Nicholas is on vacation. He has been for years." I stated, picking Charlie up and walking out of the room, turning off the light. "Why do you have him? Shouldn't he have taken Charlie with him?" He questioned. "I don't know, okay? I just know I have him and until he gets back, I'm going to have him." I raised my voice. "Why do you ask so many damned questions?" I asked him, sitting Charlie in his highchair and getting a banana out of a fruit bowl.
"Because I don't know you very well, and I feel like I should." He stated honestly, grabbing a magazine off of the counter and flipping through it. "Well you should stop. It's getting annoying." I said. "How long are you staying here?" I questioned. "As long as you'll let me." He said, taking a seat at the table. "Well, you can stay for the week. And then you need to find somewhere else to go." I said, enjoying his company. It gets tiring of the same routine everyday. I didn't have many people to keep me occupied. "Thank you, Ara." He said in the same tone he did last night. "Yeah.. What do you want for breakfast?" I asked, looking him in the eyes as I rested my hand on my hip. "I'll make it don't worry about it." He replied, standing up and heading to the kitchen.
Maybe having him around wasn't such a bad idea.
