I swung my foot over the ledge and positioned myself with my toes hanging off the side of the bridge. The water and rocks crashed below me, as the wind chilled me to the bone and made it hard for me to keep my balance. Not that it mattered, if I fell, I fell. It's what I had come up here to do in the first place. Everything in my life had led me to this point. Being abandoned as an infant by my parents, all the weird health scares, the anxiety and depression, constant bullying. There honestly wasn't a point in all of this, nonsense, anymore.
I sighed and closed my eyes and began to step forward.
"And what is it that you think you're doing?"
I was taken aback by a man that was suddenly standing behind me, "It's pretty obvious there bud. And no, I don't want your help or your concern. This is what my life has led me to, and I appreciate the concern, but it's much too late for me."
The man had a pained expression on his face as he dusted off his coat, "And why is that you feel this way"
"Honestly, I'm not important. At all. There's no reason for me to be here. I have no family. No life. If I'm gone, it won't make a difference at all."
The man hopped over the bar and stood on the ledge with me, leaning his back against the cold steel of the support beam, "You know, in all my years of time of time and space, I've never met someone not important."
I let out a sigh, "You're not going to give me that whole, there's one universe, nine planets, two hundred and four countries, eight hundred and nine islands, seven seas, and seven billion people, but only one me speech are you?"
"Actually, I'm not, because you see, that would be a lie. There's so much out there waiting for you to see and conquer. So much yet for you discover, to explore, uncover, and shape. Come with me, and let me show you your importance to the universe. To everyone. To me."
"What. What are you talking about?"
"Just come with me, take a chance. Step back over this ledge and let show you. If I can't convince you that there is meaning for life out there, or you still feel useless, or you don't want to be with me anymore, I will drop you off at this very location at this very moment. What do you have to lose?"
"I let out a sigh and dropped my head, "Okay." I slowly and careful stepped back onto the main area of the bridge.
The man that had just saved my life looked at me, "What's your name? I'd like to know who I just saved and will be joining me."
"Ray, and the name of the man that just saved me?"
A small, dorky grin spread across his face, "You can call me, The Doctor."
