In hindsight, Camila admitting she was wrong was one of the very few things that actually went well that day.
During the final class of school after the lunch incident with Jacob, Camila couldn't seem to let Lauren go; even moving her chair closer to latter's so that they were basically sharing desks. But Lauren didn't mind, finding the warm hands that were constantly on her in some way or another reassuring.
Even when school was done for the day, Camila never let go of her hand as they walked down the street together. Just after the sun had set and an ominous overcast of grey in the sky settling in, shivers coursed down Lauren's spine; as cliche as it is. The black haired girl turned to the brunette holding her hand to mention something about how uncomfortable she was feeling, but decided to wait until she'd finished her sentence. She didn't want to be rude.
But Camila never finished her sentence.
"...But yeah, I don't even know why people have arguments about whether bananas are a fruit or a vegetable," she continued, off in her own little world, "but I say; if it tastes good and it's good for you, then what's the trauma? It's not really a-" Camila's voice suddenly cut off when a loud thump sounded throughout the air.
The next few seconds happened so fast that Lauren could barely register the events that transpired.
The hand holding hers went limp and there was a tan blur in her peripheral vision before she turned to see Camila in a heap on the floor.
Lauren went to run, or scream, or move, or do something, or all three, but was interrupted by another loud thump; except this time it was accompanied by a splitting pain in the back of her skull and all she saw was black.
When Lauren finally came to, the first things her mind registered were sounds. Horrifying sounds. There was a sickening snap, followed by an ear-piercing scream. Camila's screams.
She realized that her arms and legs were bound tightly, but she didn't bother trying to move just yet; still feeling too weak to try.
Lauren slowly went to open her eyes, but was met with darkness anyway and figured she was blindfolded. And despite doing her best to stay calm in this situation, her heart was thumping loudly in her chest because she had no clue what was going on or where she was or where Camila was. When Lauren tried flexing her fingers out, she heard an unfamiliar voice flow into her ears.
"Huh, looks like your lil' pup is finally conscious." Despite being unable to see, Lauren turned her head in the direction the voice was coming from and tried to speak, but found her throat to be too dry.
"Yeah, maybe." She finally heard Camila's voice from somewhere a few meters away, breathless and as if she had been running non-stop. "But you're not gonna fucking touch her."
"Hmm..." The voice Lauren identified as a female's hummed quietly and she heard footsteps echo. They must be in a room somewhere. "That's dependent on how cooperative you are."
"I'm not going to do it." Lauren heard a sense of finality in her voice and Camila's was not attempting to hide the bitterness in her tone. "Now get your ugly mug the fuck out of my face." Lauren kept trying to control her breathing and keep it steady as she could do nothing but listen on.
"All you have to-" The strange voice picked up again, coming from the same direction as Camila's, but was soon interrupted.
"Lo, baby, listen to me." Camila sounded a lot more gentle and desperate than before. "Lo, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. Just hold tight, we're gonna get out of here. Okay? I won't let her hurt you." Camila's words for Lauren were cut off by a harsh slap.
