Steam seeps out of my lidded cup. The warm tea soothes my throat.
I've never been one for coffee.
I wrap myself up even tighter in my coat, blocking out the frost.
I switch my cold iPhone up to my opposite ear, as my friend Chloe complains about one of her professors.
"...he really does hate me. And for no reason! I'm quiet, most of the time. I turn in my work... occasionally."
I laugh, only half paying attention.
"So, did you still want to go out tonight?"
I sigh apologetically. "I'm so sorry Chloe, but I have work."
She grunts. "Again? Do you ever have a day off?"
"Not anymore. Not since they raised the tuition."
Ever since my father was killed and my mother committed suicide I've pretty much raised myself. Being passed around from group home to group home never gave me a chance to create some stability in my life and make some friends. I met Chloe last year, during my freshman year of college. I really do want to keep our friendship, but bills need to be paid.
"Ughhhhh, I get it." She groans. "I'll just go out with Dylan... again."
"I really am sorry." I say sincerely, parking my car at my apartment.
"It's okay."
There's a long silence. I unlock the lobby door with my code.
"How about I take next Saturday off? We can do whatever you want." She perks up at this.
"Anything?"
"Anything." I confirm, pressing the 3 on the elevator.
"Okay! Deal!"
I exit the elevator and spot a guy from my medicine class leaning on the railing.
"Hey I have to go."
"Okay, I'll talk to you later." I nod by reflex and hang up.
"Hey Chase." I smile.
"Oh, hey Skylah. Um- sorry about this. I just couldn't make it to class today but I really wanted to see you."
I raise my eyebrows. "Oh."
Chase is a good looking guy. He has a lean build and a sharp jawline. His green and blue eyes create a swirl of captivity.
"I would invite you in, but my apartment is a mess."
"Oh it's fine. I just came to ask you -um- if maybe you'd want to, I don't know, go out sometime?"
I can't say I'm completely surprised. I've seen the way Chase looks at me and noticed how he acts around me.
I'm tempted to say yes. He's a good guy. Nice, sweet and charming.
"No, sorry." I say quickly before unlocking my apartment door and stepping in.
I feel bad.
I know the way I told him was rude, but I don't want to get attached to him. He'll end up leaving me in the end.

Eight.
Focus.
Nine.
Focus.
Ten.
The bell sounds and I try to not look up from my homework.
"And the winner by knock out is... Two Guns." The announcer yells over the crowd. I glance up but can't see through the crowd.
Focus. Only two problems left.
"You're up, kid." My trainer, Marty, slaps my back. I sigh.
I'll finish it later.
I put my homework in my bag and slip my wrapped hands into my gloves. I try to loosen up, bouncing slightly, making my way through the crowd towards the ring.
Climbing up, Marty squirts some water in my mouth.
"Remember, he's weak on the left side."
I nod, glancing at the body my opponent knocked out moments before. "He's strong."
"You're stronger." Marty winks and hands me my mouth guard.
The referee waves us over. I stand opposite of Paxton, a.k.a Two Guns.
"You guys aren't new to this. Remember protect yourself at all times and above all obey my command at all times." The referee, Tony, glances at both of us. "Touch 'em up, good luck."
I hit gloves with Paxton and circle around him.
He jabs at me and I move to the side. I can tell from his form that he's based mostly on strength.
He jabs at me again and I slip, trying to block it but he skims the side of my head, causing me to falter slightly.
I bounce from foot to foot, surveying his form as he throws a jab, cross, hook combo that I dodge, circling away from him.
"Cmon, hit me princess." Paxton taunts.
He throws a uppercut, jab and I crown down, putting all my weight on my front foot, punching him right in his temple.
He stumbles a bit before completely falling down, knocked out.
I exit the ring before being announced as the winner. Grabbing my stuff, I nod at Marty who motions that he'll get my money for me.
I exit the gym, feeling a pair of eyes on me.
A/N: Nothing super interesting happened in this chapter. I'm still kind of figuring the story out. I hope you liked it though. Ideas on who should play Chase?
