Bluefire awoke to the crisp morning air. He stretched and padded outside, his paws crunching then sinking into the snow. He was thankful that the Warriors den was snow-proof.
"Good morning, Bluefire! Ready to go on border patrol?" Streamsplash, the Fireclan deputy, greeted him with a smile.
"As long as I don't freeze my tail off, I'll be ready for anything." Bluefire replied, yawning.
Streamsplash was a good deputy. She seemed to know which cats would get the job done. She was really kind and caring and the kits absolutely loved her. It's the reason why Bluefire has a massive crush on her.
As he padded to the thorn barrier, Sandtail was standing next to Streamsplash. Bluefire snorted with disgust and walked through the thorn barrier.
As the sun drew high above the trees, the clan grew more and more anxious. The leader, Tigerstar, was ill and had been confined to his den for almost a week now. Only Streamsplash and Heatherleaf were allowed there.
Dusk was gathering when Streamsplash finally emerged along with Heatherleaf. Her expression was painful. She trudged to the Great Stone and addressed the clan.
"Cats of Fireclan," she began, "I bring you sad news. Tigerstar is dead." Her voice cracked and she stood trembling. The Clan burst out in shock.
"He can't be dead! Why him? What will we do without him?" Cats around him shouted and panicked.
"Do not panic! As his successor, I will assume role as leader and choose a deputy." She fought to keep her voice steady as she went on.
"I say these words before Lightclan so that they may hear and approve my choice. Gingertail will be the new Fireclan deputy." Her voice rang across the hollow as Gingertail stepped forward.
"I am honored to be deputy. " He replied, his voice cool as ice.
"I will travel to Moon Mountain to receive my nine lives." She bounded down and followed Heatherleaf out the camp and to Moon Mountain. Cats around her muttered about Streamsplash being too young to be leader. Bluefire headed to his nest and settled down to the sound of murmuring voice next to him.
