Shadow

Hello. I am Lena Nightshadow. I hate my life. I am bullied everyday, and it just gets worse everyday. And having a really dark past doesn't help either. I don't blame him, but, I wish Zach wouldn't worry about me so much, I hate it when people worry about me. That's why I always act happy around the people I love, to cover up the darkness that I've kept hidden inside, and no one has ever found out. Zach is the only one that knows about it, because he is the only one I can tell since he is my best friend, the only person I trust.

We were eating lunch on the outdoor patio at school in fall, when the bully that the whole school is afraid of, Tanner, walks up and starts making threats. And of course, like always, Zach stood up and defended me. Don't please...Don't get yourself involved in this, Zach...You will only cause him to target you once I'm gone...I thought to myself, watching the scene unfold in front of me. Finally, a frustrated Tanner walked away, mad because he couldn't get past Zach to hurt me.

"See? Everything is okay." he said as he sat back down, "People care. You just need to let us help." he finished.

"But why? Why give up all of your friends to stand up for just one person?" I asked him.

"Because, you've always been my best friend, and I'm not going to leave you all alone, I'm gonna stay with you. Best friends stay together through the ups and the downs, no matter how tough it gets. Everybody has feelings." he replied.

"My feelings? Don't worry about those. No one else does." I said, running my finger down the rugged, jagged texture of the zipper on my jacket.

"Don't think like that. People do care. Your family does, you can't leave them, you are all they have left." he said.

"What's left of them." I said, staring at the beautiful, orange and red fall trees. My siblings were killed in a car accident when riding home from school. Leaving just me, and my parents devastated. "Would you come after me if I walked away?" I asked him, still staring off into space.

"Of course I would." he replied.

"Well. When I decide to go away, please, don't follow me. Your future is too valuable for you to just throw it away because of a choice I made." I said. He just looked at me with a worried look on his face.

I walked home from school, looking at the beautiful scenery around me. All the trees were painted with bright hues of red, orange, and yellow. The leaves dancing in the wind, and swimming in the creek nearby. I'm sick of crying, tired of trying. Sometimes I'm smiling, but inside I'm dying. I thought to myself as I walked along the sidewalk.

"Hey, I'm here for you. Try to think brightly, ignore the darkness in your heart." Zach said, looking at me with a reassuring look on his face.

Wait? I actually said that out loud? "I've tried. It doesn't work, the darkness in my heart just gets darker, and takes over more of my heart." I replied. The rest of the walk home was silent. Silence is my best friend. It's the only time I can actually live without being tormented by the darkness threatening to take over the rest of my mind and causing me to do things that I will regret. I try to think positively, but the positive thoughts always attract the darkness.
