If your pool has sprung a leak, which is a rare occurrence, you will certainly lose water. The most water loss that a pool suffers, though is through evaporation. The evaporation of the water from your pool is something that cannot be avoided, but as a pool owner you can take steps to lessen the amount of water lost to evaporation.

Here are some tips:

1. Keep the pool temperature at the lowest levels of comfortable swimming. The higher the temperature, the quicker the rate of evaporation. Warmer water evaporates faster than cooler water.

2. Cut back on the amount of pool-construction. A waterfall, fountain or other water feature may look stunning, but it will also use more water. If you expand the surface area of the pool - which you will do to accommodate water features - you increase the speed at which the water will evaporate. You can minimize water loss by turning off water features when not in use.

3. Use a pool cover. This is one of the most cost effective purchases you will make for your pool. Using a pool cover can help cut evaporation by up to 90% if you are diligent in keeping the swimming pool covered. Using a cover will also reduce your energy costs and chemical consumption - you will quickly realize a return on your investment in the pool cover.

If you notice your pool water levels are dropping more rapidly than you assumed they should be, talk with your pool builder in Champaign to have him determine if the pool is leaking. If it is not leaking, ask for tips and advice on steps you can take to cut back on the amount of water your pool is losing during a season.
