Melanie's P.O.V.
David is supposed to be coming home from his deployment today. I should be thrilled, but I can't stand that bastard. He forced me to marry him and then decided to sleep with whoever the hell he wanted. He just wanted me as a prize. I was nothing but a trophy for him.
It wasn't enough that he took me away from the man I love. He knew that I was in love with his cousin. That's the only reason he wanted to marry me. He just wanted to say that he was the one who stole my virginity. That couldn't be further from the truth. I gave myself to Nathaniel the night before I was supposed to get married.
David tried to get me into bed but there was no way I could do that. I've only ever loved Nathaniel. He's been my best friend since kindergarten. I've loved him for as long as I can remember. He's the only one who's ever made me feel like I was special. He knows just how to make me smile. Nathaniel knows when I need somebody to talk to or just when I need the silence. He's my one true love. We always used to say that we would one day get married. I guess that's never gonna happen now.
There's about an hour until David's plane lands which means he'll be here in about an hour and a half. I might as well take a shower to look presentable for him. He gets angry if I don't dress to impress. He thinks everyone should aim to please him. He's so damn cocky. I really can't stand it.
Almost three hours later, I'm still home by myself. David should have been here by now. He gets pissed off if I'm not where I'm supposed to be when I'm supposed to be there. He really irritates me. I wish I wouldn't of had to marry him. He threatened both mine and Nate's lives. I only agreed to this marriage so Nate could live.
My thoughts are interrupted when there's a knock on the door. It's probably just the police bringing David home from drinking, again.
I get up from my spot on the couch and head to the front door. I open it up not to find a police officer. What I do see, however, is an army officer. His name tag says Mills.
"Officer Mills, how can I help you?"
"I'm afraid you can't, Mrs. Lee. I'm afraid I have some bad news for you."
"What is it?" I can feel my heart rate speed up in my chest.
"David was killed in combat. I'm so sorry for your loss."
"No! He can't be gone."
"I'm so sorry. There was nothing we could have done to save him." He turns and walks away.
I shut the front door and put my back up against it. I slide all the way down to the floor. I can't believe David is gone. How am I supposed to take care of myself? Let alone a baby? Granted, the baby isn't David's but I can't support myself right now. Nate was always making sure I had what I needed. David told me that my place was at this house, not out working. He had a good paying job, but he only always spent his money on booze.
I've only been married for six weeks and now I'm a widow at 21. How the hell is that even possible? I know that I wasn't in love with David, but I did love him in my own way. He used to be so sweet and kind. He would always joke around with me. That was until he realized how in love I was with his cousin.
I pick myself up off the floor and walk over to the coffee table. I grab my keys and walk outside. I climb in my BMW and start it. I pull out of the drive and make my down the road. I'm going to the one place I can. The only place that's felt like a true home since this nightmare with David started.
Five minutes later I'm pulling into Nate's drive. I'm so glad he's home and by himself. I don't know what I'd do if he weren't here or he had company.
I park my car and get out. I practically run up to the door and start banging on it.
"Hold your damn horses. I'm coming." I hear Nate on the other side.
The door swings open. "What do-" He stops when he notices that I'm crying. "Mel, what happened? What's wrong?"
My tears fall harder. I throw myself into Nate's arms. He scoops me up and shuts the door behind us. He sits on the couch with me in his lap. He begins to rub my back, calming me down.
"Mel, what the hell happened? Why did you come over here trying to bang down my front door?"
I take a few moments to collect myself. "I got a visit from Offiver Mills just a few minutes ago. David is gone, Nate. He's dead. How am I going to support myself? And a baby?"
He gives me a questioning look. "Baby?" I nod. "You mean he got you pregnant and then gets himself killed?"
"He didn't get me pregnant."
"What?"
"I didn't sleep with David. I couldn't bring myself to do it. Not after what we had shared. You're the father of my baby, Nate."
He looks stunned. "Really?"
I nod my head. "What am I gonna do, Nate? I don't have a job and David told basically everyone to not give me one. He never sent home money. How am I going to support me and this baby?" I start crying again. "I think my only option is to put this baby up for adoption. I don't want to do that, but I can't take care of it."
"You can and you will."
"How?"
"You're going to move in with me."
"Nate, I can't-"
"Yes, you can. Mel, I love you. You're carrying our baby. I'm going to take care of you and our little bundle of joy. We're going to be a family just like we always talked about. Do you hear me?"
"Yes, I do. I love you too."
He gives me a sweet, tender kiss. How I love this man.
"Mel, we need to go get your belongings."
I groan. "It can wait. There are more important matters right now."
"Like what?"
I move to where I'm now straddling him and wrap my arms around his neck. "Like getting rid of your little friend. We wouldn't want him to get hurt. Now would we?"
"I guess not." I give him another kiss. "Mel, are you absolutely sure about this? You did just lose your husband."
"Whom I wasn't in love with like I am with you. I'm more than absolutely sure that I want to make love to you."
He smiles. "Just checking." He then stands up, causing me to wrap my legs around his waist. We make our way towards his bedroom.
I know I just found out that David was killed overseas. I can't help the fact that I'm in love with Nathaniel Winters. He's my best friend and soulmate. Plus, the heart wants what it wants.
