I didn't go home, instead I went to headquarters. My walk through the parking lot, up the elevator, and to my desk was all a blur. I sat down in my office and cried. I let myself go, not caring who heard me.
My mind flashes through all the memories he and I shared, and I cry even harder. Yes my brother was very messed up, but he didn't deserve this. Nobody deserves to die like that.
I drew my legs up to my chest and wrapped my arms around them, staring numbly at the glass windows that make up the walls of my office.
I don't know how long it had been, but next thing I know Brayden was standing in front of my desk. "Hikari?"
I continue looking at my desk and pretend that I didn't hear him. "Hikari?!" he yells.
I jump and slowly look up at his face. My migraine was stronger than ever and my heart was heavy with the loss of my brother. "What?" I whisper.
He looks at me for a minute. "We found a man lingering around the crime scene. We arrested him and he's ready in Interview room 1 if you feel up to it."
I slowly untwine my arms and get up. I wipe off my face and follow Brayden out of my office. We walk down the hallway and stop in front of the first door on the left. I was about to open the door when Brayden puts his arm out in front of me. I look at him and raise my eyebrows.
"Remember, Hikari, we are only questioning him on what he saw at the scene. He is not a suspect yet. Understood?" Brayden says to me.
I look at him for a moment and my eyebrows go even farther up my forehead. "I understand, Brayden, but with that tone of voice I was thinking that you suddenly got promoted to Chief of this department," I said coldly.
Brayden's eyes got wide at the coldness of my voice. "No, no, no, no, no. I didn't mean anything by it. Just looking out for you is all," he said shaking his head wildly.
"I may be grieving but that doesn't mean that I'm not perfectly functional," I replied with a little less ice in my voice.
"Sorry, Hikari. I didn't mean anything by it."
I nod to show that I accept his apology. "Come on. Let's just get this interview over with so I can find who actually murdered my brother."
Brayden steps back and I open the door. Sitting in the chair across from us is a man. He has cold dark brown eyes and skin pale as snow. His dull brown hair hangs in waves across his forehead. Just looking at him makes me feel as if I'm standing in the room with my brother's murderer, but I put those feelings aside and sit down at the bolted down table.
"Hi. My name is Chief Hikari and this is Lieutenant Brayden. What's your name?"
Silence. And not the awkward kind of silence, but the kind of cold silence that matched his cold eyes.
I put my mouth in a straight line and raise my eyebrows. "Well, alrighty then. Good cop gone now here's the bad cop. What were you doing lingering around my crime scene in the middle of the night?" I asked him my voice also matching his cold behavior.
No answer. I rub my forehead in frustration feeling my migraine come back. I growl at him. "You are really starting to piss me off you know that?" I tell him.
This time he shrugs and smiles like he finds this some kind of cruel joke. "What? Do you not like the coldness of man who was arrested in the middle of the night for taking a walk?!" he yells at me in an Italian accent.
