I go upstairs into the music room where Niomi is playing her bass. She's gotten really good over the past few years. I wish I was as good as her.
"About time you came up here. Are you nervous about this place? It all seems fishy to me.."
"You worry too much, Mimi."
"Whatever. I just want to be alive when Aly comes home."
"When is she coming home?"
"I don't know. I haven't read her letter."
Niomi's girlfriend, Aly, was sent away to a facility for teenage deliquents, they call it a "Children's Home." I guess anyone from ages 10-15 who lives in the state of New York and is a law breaker can get sent there to straighten them out. Niomi says they have more than one of these homes in the state.
"Well, maybe you should read it then?"
Niomi just shrugs her shoulders and continues to play her bass. I pick up my electric and join her.
"Ser, what if we get killed?"
I roll my eyes, "We won't, I hope."
-The next day-
We are all in the car, Mom driving.
"Are we there yet?"
"Niomi, we left ten minutes ago."
Niomi rolls her eyes and turns her iPod back on.
"You know, Sis, your daughter is going to go deaf with her music so loud."
"I know but, she won't listen to me. She thinks that she has to drown out the world by killing her ear drums.." There talking is boring me, so I turn on my iPod as well. I also don't like Niomi's music. She is currently listening to, I think Sum 41. I'm not into them, at all. Give me My Chemical Romance or Green Day please.
"Serika! Serika! Wake up! We're almost there." I open my eyes as my sister shakes me. How long had I been sleeping?
"Ohkay, the map says that there's a parking lot right up here somewhere on our right." Aunt Pamela announces. We all look for the parking lot, that soon comes into view. The parking lot is full of many different kinds of cars. None of them look too expensive though. There aren't any fancy sports cars or anything like that. We park the car and find a sign pointing us where to walk. We all start walking towards the town.
"Shit! Wait. I forgot my phone." Niomi exclaims.
"Watch your mouth!" My Mom yells at Niomi as she starts to run back to the car.
"Give me a mirror." Niomi yells back. Mom rolls her eyes and sighs.
We only have to wait a few minutes for Niomi to come back. As she walks up, we continue to walk.
"For wanting us to possibly live in this town, they're already lacking hospitality. We should just be able to drive in like any other place."
"This isn't any other place, Niomi. This place is different. It's special." Aunt Pamela informs her.
It feels like we've been walking forever. Soon, we all see something.
"What is that!?" Aunt Pamela asks.
"I was wondering that same thing, Pam."
"It looks like a wall of fog." I announce.
"It looks, like we're about to die."
"Oh, stop it Niomi. Look, there are people coming this way." Mom says and then she walks over to the family of five, "Excuse me. Is this the way to Newtonville?"
