Chapter 1
Rapture
Deserted; that’s the only word that comes to my mind while I walk down Center Street.
“Where is everyone, Jake?” Jen asks me.
“I… have no idea,” I respond.
My name is Jake Jensen. I am 15 and I am not like you or anyone else in the world, besides Jen. We have been dating for 4 years and are undividable. She and I are immortal. Even though her and I are both immortal, I’m more powerful than her. I can absorb rithen from APBs. Rithen is basically the more powerful version of matter. It also includes what you would call super powers. APBs are known as abnormally powerful beings. None of them are smiled upon. In fact, there are hunting packs dedicated to killing APBs. Also, I can teleport. If you want to see the world I could probably take you in less than ten minutes. Since Jen and I are immortal, I can absorb rithen, and I can also teleport, we are also APBs. She and I are the only people who know of our powers. I haven’t told even my own mother or ADAM.
ADAM is a computerized humanoid that I had developed when I was 10. Ever since then everything has been a breeze. He has helps me with school, girls, well girl, and when I feel stressed out. You see, ADAM is just a really very intelligent system. Even though I can tell ADAM everything, he is hooked up to the World Wide Web and uses it for almost everything. Once I tell him something he simply searches it so he can reply. So if I tell him I am an APB the Government will eventually see it once he searches it. At the same time though, it feels good to know that Jen is the only one I have.
All of a sudden I feel really hungry. And I don’t know about you, but sometimes when you’re hungry, nothing sounds good. “Hey, you want to go home and get some lunch?” I ask Jen.
“Yeah, let’s do it!”
On the walk home, there is still nothing in the streets beside her and I. Once we arrive at Jensen Manor, we raid the pantry. Breads, candy, fruits, sausages, jerkies, there is just so much to choose from! We decide to make a party dish that simply includes crackers, cheese, and slices of salami. We sit on the couch, put on a movie, and situate ourselves with the plate on the coffee table and our feet lied on it as well. Once we had finished the dish, Jen scoots closer to me and lays her head on my chest. I can’t help myself when I put my arm around her shoulders and lay my head against hers.
When the movie ends I am full and comfortable. I look at Jen’s lightly tanned face and see that her eyes are closed as she is in a deep sleep. I agree with her ideas most of the time and here I am doing it again.
When I wake, it seems like I had only slept for a few minutes. Jen is screaming at me, pointing outside. I have no idea why she is so worried because the house is protected by a force field and nothing could possibly happen to us. Once I finally come to, I walk over to the window and all I can see is fire. Cars, houses, buildings, everything is engulfed in an inferno. The city I love is being burned to the ground as well as all of the people that I grew to know. I look up to see a giant black ball falling on the field. It bounces off immediately and explodes in midair. Now trust me, I’m not a crazy person. I know that the balls falling from the sky aren’t coming out of nowhere. This has to be some form of terrorism or invasion.
