The man sat in his hotel room that he had rented for the night just off the highway. The room was dark all aside from the lamp at the end of the room which gave a faint glow to the hotel's minimal furniture. As he sat down on the less than comfortable double bed, he held his hand against his stomach where the wound was still painfully concealed by his blood spattered jacket. Once he had removed the blood soaked article of clothing and tossed it to his side, he revealed the true extent of the stab wound. Blood had pooled on his leg where it had been running so he hobbled into the bathroom and did his best to clean it up with a rag. "No fucking hospitals." he thought desperately looking around the dimly lit room for a phone book. Once he found the page he was looking for he tore the piece out and set it on the table beneath the lamp. *Click* *click* *click* the buttons on the old phone ticked rapidly till the familiar Humm of the dialer rang in his ears. After a minute or two of ringing, a man finally picked up the phone. "Orange county veterinary clinic how can I help you?" The man clenched his stomach and pressed the phone between his cheek and his shoulder as he got out a piece of paper and a pen while he stared vacantly at the clock above the door. "Yeah I was wondering if you guys are still open? My dog just got hit and he's severely injured." The man on the other end of the line went silent for a moment then abruptly came back on again. "Yes sir well be open till midnight." "Alright thanks." The man took note of the time and walked outside to where his white Chevy nova was still parked out front. After taking a second to look around in the parking lot, he put the car into gear and skidded out into the road. Turning his radio up with gloved hand, music drifted through the backround and thunder clapped furiously overhead. The red glare of tail lights shone brightly against the cold wet road and as he glanced at the paper where he had written the adress, the air became colder and colder. Headlamps rhythmically passed him by on the highway for a few miles when he finally reached the turnoff for the vet. After a couple more minutes of navigating the side streets, he roared into one of the parking spaces out front of the building that read veterinary clinic. The streetlights behind him reflected colorfully against the golden scorpion on his jacket.
