some things i can think of to do for the environment:
1. Eat a plant-based diet. Now, this might sound controversial — who doesn't love dairy and meat? — but is the most noteworthy. National Geographic said that a vegan diet uses 400 gallons of water a day, whereas its omnivorous counterpart uses 1,000 gallons of water a day. Thus, eating a plant-based diet is a form of water conservation, among other things.
2. Don't use vehicles. Ride a bike or walk instead of driving a car. If that's not manageable, carpool or use public transportation.
3. Be plastic-free.
4. The five R's of the zero waste lifestyle, in order of greatest to least: Refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot (compost). Instead of throwing that orange peel in the garbage can, find out how to compost it! I think some community gardens actually let you take stuff to them to compost. Recycle everything you can, and if you're not sure whether that thing is recyclable, Google it instead of just shrugging and throwing it in the garbage. Reuse — a prominent example would be reusable menstrual products instead of disposable, because the average American woman will use over ten THOUSAND tampons or pads in her lifetime, even once estimated to be as high as 17,000, and that's not sustainable. The cool thing about reusing is that after the initial investment, it'll actually save you money long term. Google the five R's of the zero waste lifestyle!
5. Conserve water. Reduce the length of your showers; if it's yellow, let it mellow; don't let sinks run while you're not using them; fix any leaks around the house.
6. Pick up litter whenever you see it instead of just acting like it doesn't exist.
7. Be a minimalist. Need less stuff, use less resources making that stuff.
8. Use natural products, because chemicals toxic to you probably aren't so great for the environment either.
9. Buy locally whenever possible, because then transportation isn't used to transport your food long distance.
Thank you so much if you read this far! Everyone can improve for the environment — nobody's perfect! Please share!
