In Sebastian's mind, two things were obvious: Everyone deserved equal treatment unless they were terrible people, and his house was haunted. Now, his mother and brother didn't really believe him, as the house had only been erected earlier that year. They just haven't seen it he thought one morning as he trudged his way to school.
The night before, he was home alone. As usually happened when he was left to his own devices, he had been in the middle of a one man performance of Hamilton when he saw something out of the corner of his eye. He could've sworn that he saw shadows where they shouldn't be. It was only there for a second though, before he turned his head to reveal that there was apparently nothing there. None-the-less, he had spent the rest of the night with his wooden baseball bat by his side, still singing, but definitely on edge. Badly.
Seb usually wasn't a superstitious person, but he was open for proof for the otherwise. Even the morning after he was still slightly on edge. This was the third time this fortnight it had happened, after all. Either I'm going crazy or... No I'm just going crazy he thought to himself as he entered the school, making a beeline for the science block, where his mates were sitting. They'll believe me! He smiled as he neared his mates. They were all already there, chattering and laughing between themselves. Seb smiled to himself as he jogged up to them, thinking how lucky he was to actually have friends this year.
"Morning Seb!" Called Alex as he nodded to him.
"Morning!" Echoed Cathy and Kate as Seb set his bag down on the wooden bench behind him.
"How are you all doing this morning?" Seb queried as he rolled his shoulders back, enjoy the gentle popping sensation it provided.
"I want to die," Alex exclaimed half jokingly, and they all laughed in agreement. Seb was glad that he had these wackos to call friends. They all had the same sense of humour, and the same yearning for the sweet release of death. Some more than others.
"It happened again last night," Seb quietly sighed while he sat down, back arched slightly as he leaned against his thighs. The rest of the group groaned slightly, but not in an annoyed way.
"You serious Seb?" Asked Kate as she sat down next to him, gently pulling him into a hug. He was lucky that he had a group of friends who understood.
"Yeah guys. Same conditions as last time. Home alone, in the lounge room, singing,"
"Maybe it was your terrible singing," Jested Cathy. Alex gently punched them in the arm.
"Shut up dude," He chuckled. Here we go again. "You know that Seb here can sing relatively well. When compared to us, at least. Now, I know, that isn't saying much..." Alex started into one of his rants, his second headphone gently swaying in front of his chest as he gestured and paced. Seb just tuned him out. His rants could last for hours if you got him started.
Besides him, Kate pulled Seb in tighter.
"It's time like this, Kate, when I remember why people think we're dating," Kate snorted.
"Shut up, moss head," She playfully teased, flicking his arm. She let him go and readjusted her glasses, pushing them back up the bridge of her nose. Seb winced slightly as the sunlight reflected off of her glasses back into his eyes.
"Cool it with the high-beams, Kate," he chuckled as he moved slightly.
"Well sorry!" She mock-apologised. "So. it really happened again?" She asked, earnestly.
He nodded. "Yeah. Right in the corner of my eye."
"You might be going crazy?" Offered Cathy.
"You don't think I've thought of that?" Seb retorted as the first bell sounded and he stood up, followed quickly by Cathy and Kate. Kate hugged Seb one more time and they said their goodbyes and Kate and Alex and began making their way to form class.
"So," Started Cathy as they began walking side by side. "It happened again last night?"
"Sure did," Seb sighed. "It's really putting me on edge."
Cath nodded, mulling something over in her head.
"So, the... things you see. What do they look like? Shadows?" Seb nodded, and so did Cath.
"The shadows could be alive... maybe." She slowly repeated that sentence a couple of times.
"Nah," Seb shook his head. "I'm just fucked in the brain," He chuckled as the reached their form class and sat down. School had official began.
