School had just ended. Anna was sitting outside and reading a book quietly while listening to music. Today was just like the others; boring. She didn't want to go home. She didn't even view it as home anymore. A mom who is nearly never home and a dad that doesn't accept the things she likes, like mystery books, bands that aren't country, and drawing. "Those will never help you out in the real world." He always said. Honestly she didn't care about the real world. It was falling to pieces. So she stayed in her world. It was only her and she was fine with that. It started to rain. Anna smiled. "Finally" She whispered to herself. She went back to reading when Mia showed up. "Hey Anna darling! Do you mind doing me a favor? Of course you don't!" Mia wouldn't even let Anna speak. But she was Anna's only friend and gave her the books her dad would never buy so she did as she was told. "I need you to write an essay based on a song of your choice." Mia instructed. "Alright. Is that all?" Anna would do one of her favorite songs for Mia and she'd do another for her won essay. Mia shook her head and dug in her purse. "No. I got you something. 'Cradle and All' By James Patterson. It sounded like your type of book so I figured I'd get it for you." Mia smiled until she saw Anna's jacket sleeve come up as she reached out for the book. "A-anna? Do you...cut your wrist?" Anna's face turned ghostly pale. She grabbed the book quickly and covered her wounds. "U-um no of course not. just the cat got me that's all." Anna smiled and hid the lie as best she could. "Oh. Okay. Be careful. I'll talk to you later." Mia walked off. Damn that was close. Anna started to write the essay and fell asleep on the bench.
