"I want to leave."
Toriel sighs.
"You wish to return home, do you not? This is the end of the Ruins. I have to destroy it. Every human that falls down here meets the same fate. They come. They leave. They die."
She looks away.
"You don't understand. You naive child. Asriel... he can't take another death. He was absolutely devastated when the last human died. I don't know what he'll do if you die as well. Please just go upstairs."
"..."
Why so silent?
"...Reasons."
"No."
"Then prove to me. Prove that you can survive the Underground."
"Toriel blocks the way!"
Wow, had no idea.
I was shocked when a sphere of fire aimed at me, dodging quickly.
"Toriel looks through you."
This time, four golden rimmed buttons appeared in front of me. One had Fight, another Act, then Item, and last was Mercy.
"You have a choice. Your first true choice. You can kill her, or spare her."
My hand trembled. I didn't want to kill her, but...
Will I die if I spare her?
"That depends on how strong you are. On how DETERMINED you are."
I click the Mercy and choose Spare.
I'm determined.
Toriel sweeps her paw in front of me, sending fireballs in my direction. One hits me, dropping my HP by three points.
I press Spare again.
She hesitates before sending more fireballs at me. This time, I dodge them all.
"Toriel prepares a magical attack."
I press Spare. She hesitates longer before sweeping more fireballs my way. I hit her hand this time by accident and my HP drops four points instead of three.
"Toriel is acting aloof."
I Spare her. This time, her reaction changes.
"...?"
She shoots fireballs at me. I lose so much HP that I am now at 5 HP. I click Spare.
"What are you doing?"
She hits me again. I have 2 HP.
"Attack or run away!"
Fire balls fall haphazardly, but don't touch me. Spare.
"What are you proving this way? Fight me or leave!"
Spare. Same attack.
"Stop it. Stop looking at me that way."
I press Spare, the voice oddly quiet in my mind. Toriel hesitates.
"I know you want to leave but... Go upstairs now."
She stopped her attacks.
What is wrong with you?
"...Nothing. Just bittersweet memories."
I keep hitting Spare.
"I promise we'll take good care of you here. I know we don't have much, but... We can have a good life here."
Spare.
"I understand now. You would just be unhappy trapped down here. I'm surprised Asriel isn't after all the time we've spent down here. After all, the Ruins are very small once you get used to them. My expectations... Asriel's loneliness... My fear... For you, my child, I will put them aside."
She stops the battle and leans down to hug me. I hear the voice mumble something.
"Take care. And do not return."
She walks away, and as I walk down the hallway past the Inner Wall, I hear a small child's wails behind me. I'm tempted to turn around, bit the voice refuses.
"No. It will only hurt him more. Asriel is blind to the problems that lie outside these walls. Watching you leave will open his eyes."
That wasn't funny.
"It wasn't supposed to be."
