As I was walking home, I saw a shadowy figure run across my lawn. Then, I saw two glowing eyes in the darkness. I took out my phone and shone the light on the figure.

It was a black and white cat! And it was staring at me, watching my every move. "That's odd.. Usually animals get scared when i get near them.." I thought.

Then, I decided to try to convince my parents to let me keep the cat.

"Mom, pleaseee!!!"

"No, honey. We've been over this.. You have to wait before your little brother turns at least 4 until you can get a pet. It'll be too dangerous before that."

"Come on!! This is like the first animal that actually wasn't afraid of me!! I might NEVER see an animal who doesn't run away from me!"

"Well, that's a good point..."

"Please Mom! If the cat hurts Jeff, I'll let you take Way.." I stopped to think about how much I should say. "$5 away from my monthly allowance!"

"Hm, alright. I guess that is reasonable enough.."

"YIPEE!" I walked over to the door and opened it. I knew the cat would be there because it looked at me with interest.

I don't know how I knew but I just did. I had a feeling.. Just as I predicted, the black and white cat was still on the lawn, chewing away at a blade of grass. It seemed like it was waiting for me. I carefully picked it up and carried it to my house.

"Mom! We need to buy some supplies for the cat!" I called to my mom.

My mom drove me to the store near our house. I picked lots of toys, a bed, a litterbox, some litterbox sand, and food.

"You know you're going to have to dump the litterbox everyday and clean up after it, right?" my mom asked.

"Yeah, I know.." I replied.

"By the way, do you know if the cat is a boy or a girl?"

"It's a boy, Mom.."

"Well, how do YOU know, if you're so smart,."

"Because.." I started. But then I stopped. 'How DO I know? I'm sure of it though: the cat is a boy.' I thought to myself. "uh, well, I'm not sure how I know.."

----------------------•-----------------•

"HI THERE!" I greeted the cat as I walked in the door. He was sitting on the floor very still, only its eyes moving I put down the bags I was carrying and looked through them for the toys. I found them and laid them down in front of him. Then, I set up the bed, put some food into some trays, and dumped some litterbox sand into the litterbox.

As he walked over to the kitchen, where I was standing, he started to eat some food and drink some water. 'Hm.. Name.. Hm..' the cat was done eating its fill and was staring at me, his tail moving back and forth. I stood there for approximately 5 minutes, staring at him as I tried to think of a name that would fit him.

Then, I snapped my fingers and said," your new name is 'Courage'" I bent down to pet him. He purred, as if approving his new name.

I went to my bedroom thinking about how this was the best day ever, next to the last day of school in 6th grade-- the day where we went to the high school's swimming pool. I was so lost in my thoughts that I almost didn't notice a speedy Courage race into my bedroom as I was closing the door. I looked up and laughed. Courage wanted to sleep in my room tonight. I was surprised at how Courage and I got along so well. This wasn't just ANY cat.. This was my cat of destiny.
