It was a while before Brit came back. Rene's hearing came back so that was all good. The city was quiet but sound of fire crackling and smoke making the whole world look polluted. Even as far as they were, the grass completely five feet from them leading up to the bridge had been burned completely gray.
Brit was shaking and she couldn't get anything that had happened out of her mind. Her muscles ached and were in severe pain. So did Rene's.
"Brit, I've been meaning to ask you something." Rene said looking down at his feet.
"Yea?" Brit replied.
"Um. So.. uh.." Rene couldn't get it out.
"Rene, just say it." Brit said a little annoyed.
"Would you maybe.. well, wanna be something more.. like uh... I don't know." Rene said trying to look straight at Brit, but it wasn't possible.
"Rene." Brit said with twinkling eyes.
Rene looked down again, but then Brit leaned in closer. He could feel her breathing in him and it was soothing. He really liked her. He loved her.
Rene looked up and Brit kissed him. It was a good kiss.
Brit sat back and relaxed. Rene couldn't stop smiling. Brit leaned back in for another kiss. It was like magic. Everything that was happening was gone at that moment.
"Rene?" Brit said.
"Yea, Brit?" He said back.
"I think I'm in love with you." She said. She pressed a check against his. They were soaking wet, but that didn't matter.
"I love you Brit." Rene said. He felt amazing with Brit there by his side.
"All these years, who knew it would be you and I?" Brit asked smiling.
"No one accept me." He smiled. "Brit, I've loved you all these years. I've been waiting for you."
Brit felt so good about this. It was so romantic that Rene took the time thinking about her.
Rene took Brit's hand and held it. He smiled at her and they locked eyes. This is what was suppose to happen. Her and him. Him and her. Together.
"Hey, remember what I said earlier about how we were always going to stay just friends?" Brit asked.
"Yea." Rene said a little scared.
"Let's pretend I never said that." Brit said with a smile. Rene smiled too.
It was all quiet. Then they heard a boom. Brit and Rene jerked and looked the way the boom came from. It was blocking their exit!
"Rene! Our exit was bombed! How can we get out!" Brit started crying like she never has before.
"Brit I will go. I'm going through there to get you out of here." He said.
"No, Rene. You can't do that." She looked at him with deep eyes that were red and swollen.
"Brit, I have to." He said. "I have to get you out of here." He started to head for the exit that was fiery.
"Rene! No! Please don't!" Brit yelled, but it was too late. Rene was already in. She heard him scream in pain and that made her sob worse. She heard the door open then she ran through.
Brit saw Rene laying out the door with an ashy face and burned arms. He coughed a lot.
"Rene?" She asked.
"Brit, I'll be ok." Rene said. "Take me to one of the hospital tents." He said coughing. Brit helped him up and carried him to the closest tent.
----------------------------------------------"Well, Mr. Rene, looks like your going to have to stay with us for a little while." The nurse said politely. Brit was by his side.
"Will he be ok?" She asked.
"Should be in a little while." The nurse said. Brit nodded and the nurse left.
"I'm glad your ok, Rene." Brit said with worried eyes.
"I am too, Brit." He smiled and they kissed. She was his now. They loved each other.
