As I opened the door, I quickly took in my surroundings. There was a smartboard at the front of the room, and a black chalkboard on both sides of it, completing the wall. Then, on the left side of the room, there was the teachers desk, with a computer and stacks of papers. In front of the desk were about twenty desks, practically all of them occupied.
I looked around, not seeing the teacher at first glance. My schedule had said Mr. J. Conrad, so at least I knew that I was looking for a male. Still not seeing a teacher, I decided to just place my late slip on the teachers' desk, and then find an empty seat. The receptionist at the main office had given my brothers and I late slips for homeroom along with our schedules, under the assumption that we would be late. After placing the slip on the desk, I turned to face the class, who had stopped talking amongst themselves and now were mainly staring at me, giving me curious yet friendly looks. Putting a smile on my face, I headed towards the first empty seat I saw, which just so happened to be front and center. As I sat down, the girl on my left turned to me, sticking out her hand for me to shake while smiling warmly at me.
"Hey, I'm Anna. You're new here, right?" she asked, still smiling kindly.
"Yeah, I just moved here from Washington. I'm Kaylin," I responded, shaking her outstretched hand.
"Washington? Wow, that's far! Why'd you move, if you don't mind me asking?" Anna inquired, actually seeming interested.
"Oh, it was a family thing. It's not that bad though; my brothers and I really like it here so far."
"Brothers? Do they go here?" Anna asked, even more interested than before. "How many do you have? I only have an older sister, no brothers."
"Well, Trev is twenty-three, and he just graduated from Harvard. Then there's Andy who's eighteen, and Liam, my twin brother. The three of us are seniors this year. And Connor is fourteen; he's a freshman." I hesitated a bit, but then continued, "And there's Devin. He's nineteen months."
"Wow, five brothers! I only have Amy... Ugh, you're the only girl. And you're a twin?! That's so cool! Your youngest brother isn't even two yet? Aww, I wish I had a baby sibling!" Anna replied excitedly, though she was pouting.
"Yeah, five brothers and no sisters. I love being a twin though! And yeah, Devin was... pretty unexpected. I was, uhh, only sixteen when he w-was born," I answered a little nervously.
"Five brothers?" I heard someone say, but I didn't recognize the deep, masculine voice, so I looked around me. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone I thought I would never see again.
"Josh?" I said, louder than he had spoken. His bright blue eyes were focused on me, as if trying to find out what I was hiding.
Suddenly, his face broke into a wide grin as he made his way towards me; I took in his appearance as he moved. He was about 6'3", and had chocolate brown, messy hair. He had a fit body and great smile, but his most striking feature was his electric blue eyes. As he reached my desk, I stood up and hugged him.
"Hey Kay. What's this I hear about five brothers? I ran into Andy and Liam a couple of minutes ago and they mentioned something about a new edition too."
"You did? Did they make it to homeroom alright? Ugh, I knew I should have walked them there!" I said, stepping back from his embrace. He chuckled at my words and nodded, answering my question and allowing me to continue. "And, um, Devin, yeah, he, uhh, um, he's only nineteen months. He was born, um, when I was sixteen, uhh, after you guys moved though, so you wouldn't know anything about him I guess."
"Wow! Your dad always swore that they were stopping after Connor... Guess not though, huh? Wait, I thought your mom couldn't have anymore kids? I remember because she always wanted another girl," Josh looked at me quizzically.
