when auden first sees coraline
all he can think is hurricane.
she's a mix of dull colors;
not happy,
and not sad,
like a paint palette worn with age.
"i like your necklace,"
he says to her one day
on the bleachers,
motioning to the silver chain
wrapped around her neck.
she gives him a deathly
glare.
then, she gets up leaves,
her long, weathered skirt
floating behind her.
"sorry," he murmurs.
