Z hated me. I knew he would. But it was honestly the best choice I have ever made.
"Is he still texting you?" Aura asked, she held her keys in one hand and a Starbucks coffee in the other.
"I don't really blame him, Aura." I said, nodding my head. I looked down at my phone screen. Sixty text messages unread by me. I knew his heart was breaking.
"Oh God. I went through this with Logan. I swear, guys act more like females than we do. I think I was the man of the relationship when I was with Logan." Aura chuckled. This was not a laughing matter but Aura always found ways to make light of hard situations. I shook my head and decided to turn my phone completely off.
"Baby? Baby?" I heard my stepmother call. Quickly, Aura hid the blunt she placed on my bed. My stepmother burst through the door, inspecting the cleanliness of my room. She fixed her eyes on Aura, who sat with an annoyed look on her face. My stepmother rolled her eyes at Aura's lavender, pink, and teal-dyed hair and as she would describe it, "outrageous" make-up. This made Aura clear her throat and smile. My stepmother finally looked at me.
"Have you packed up yet? We leave tomorrow morning." Her smooth voice flooded my room with security. I closed my eyes for a second.
"Yes, everything is ready." I answered.
"Your father will be home around Midnight. Get some sleep. We will leave around 4 in the morning." She said, and with that she left my room. Aura pulled her blunt out again and began to light it. I shook my head.
"Not tonight. She's here early, and I'm gonna talk to Z for a little bit." I said, refusing the blunt.
"Your loss, Baby. I'm going out onto your balcony then, she won't smell it." Aura said, walking out leaving a trail of pineapple, mangoes, coconuts, and weed behind her. I inhaled deeply. I love Aura's aroma, she smelled so sweet. She was such a carefree spirited girl that I wish I could be.
"Z," I spoke softly into my phone. After 75 messages, I felt like I really owed him at least an hour of my time.
"Baby, please tell me what the fuck is going on. You can't just text me and tell me it's over and that you're leaving... I need a fucking essay as to why you're leaving me." Z said. He was angry but hurt.
"I'm so sorry, Z. I wasn't thinking earlier. I didn't mean to break up with you like that but I didn't want to hurt myself. I was being selfish. I'm moving across the country tomorrow. I'm going to Pennsylvania. So, we can't be together anymore and I'm sorry." I was not good with break ups, and this was the hardest break up yet. Zaden, or Z, is or rather, was a really good boyfriend. We never really argued either.
"We can't go long distance? Please, Baby, I need you!" I just imagined his pleading hazel eyes peering into my brown ones. I began to picture him in my head. He had warm buttery skin. His eyes were two golden hazel rings that loved to roam. His lips were full, luscious, thick, and pink. His jawline and nose were literally perfect. And, good God his hair was heaven-sent. God picked each chocolate curl that rested on his head. I already knew I was going to miss the feeling of running my hands through the silky curls while he fell asleep. I was going crazy now. I cannot break up with such a perfect human being.
"Z... I don't do long distance relationships. It would only tear us apart. It's best if we just go our ways. I promise you, I will always miss you." I said.
"Baby... you mean to tell me you won't be coming back? I can still see you! This can work, listen to me please! It can work. I can even fly to come see you every weekend... please. I can't be without you." Z begged.
"Z! Stop it please. Look, I won't be coming back here at all. I have to leave for a reason. This will not work. I really love you, Z. I hope you find someone that will make you happy!" I said, hoping that would give him some motivation or something.
"Baby. I'm happy with you! What don't you get?" Okay. Now I was starting to regret calling him.
"Z, I have to go. I love you okay? But, I won't be back again. I'm gonna grow old in another state without you. I'm sorry. I really hope you find someone. Bye."
"But, Baby, wai-" And just like that, I had just broke Zaden Mentos' heart. I could still see his hazel eyes but this time they were watery, staring at me with hurt. I squeezed my eyes shut and shook the image out of my head. As I began to lay down on my bed again, my phone beeped.
"Can I atleast see you tonight before you go?" Read a text from Z. I rolled my eyes.
"No. I'm sorry. I'm gonna be busy all night." I texted back. Who would've thought that bad boy Zaden would be so ... whipped?
"Alright, I'm done," Aura announced, coming in from my balcony. Her eyes were shiny and red and she held a huge grin on her pretty face. "How'd it go?"
"It... went... pretty well." I lied.
"Oh. That's good. Z is okay with you leaving now?"
"Oh, yeah. We talked it out." I'm so tired now. I checked my phone screen to see what time it was. 10:57 P.M.
"Hmm. That's good. I'm gonna go, okay? It's late and unlike your lucky ass, I have to go to hell tomorrow." Aura chuckled, picking up her keys and half full Pumpkin Spice latte.
"Okay! I'll, uh, call you tomorrow I guess." I smiled sleepily.
"Yeah. Facetime me when you get to the airport or something." Aura said before walking out of my room.
Maybe ten minutes later, I found myself surrounded by complete silence. My room was now a boring white. I was so depressed. I was moving to a different state where I had to start all over. I had to give up everything now. My place of being captain on the field hockey team, my place of being the cutest boy at school's girlfriend, and my place of being Baby, Elena's daughter. Now when I went to Pennsylvania, no one would know who Elena is or was. They would only know me by my real name, which I had spent so long telling people not to call me by. My stepmother told me to think of this move as a detox. She said I'd be getting rid of all my secrets because no one would know me in Pennsylvania. But, I like my secrets. I like living here in my hometown.
"Baby, let's go. We're leaving early, your dad is here." My stepmother called. And, with that I wiped a tiny tear from my face and grabbed my suitcase. Here's to a new life.
