You know mom i remember how it all started.
It was when we moved into the new house. What age was i? 4 maybe 5? I was so young. So innocent. So unsuspecting.
The new house was beautiful mom. Do you remember how i used to run from room to room? You always laughed so hard when you recount those times. We were so happy. All of us.
The new house was big much bigger than the old one. This one had two floors. The main floor had the living room and the three bedrooms. Judy's, dad and yours and right at the end of the hall mine.
Do you remember what i told you about the Basement though? I always told you not go into the basement. You would brush it off and wave away my fears. You probably cant remember me telling you that at all.
I remember though, I can't forget.
It all started with me going into the basement on my own a few times. When i went down there to get something i would see thing moving small black things. In the corners, on the Tv cabinet, in the hallway, in the laundry room. Everywhere. They would move in and out in the corner of my eye. This would cause me to dash into the half-dimmed room and scurry up stairs. I remember one time Judy commented "Oh Dori's scared again!"
I was scared of these things mom. I was really scared. When you sent me down into the darkness alone, i feared for my life. I never knew what would happen when i went down there. I got to the point i wouldn't go anywhere without a light being on. But i also didn't want anyone to know i was afraid. I hid my fear the best i could mom. But that was until seeing wasn't the worst bit of it...
It was not long after i started seeing them that i had started hearing them. Saying things in hushed whispers. Mocking me. Snickering. Moving objects in the basement. The small noises meant nothing to you and the rest of the family. You could turn your back to the sounds. You closed your eyes to the unknown living in the house.
I remember that this one time you found a handkerchief waiting for you on the bed. You laughed it off. You all laughed it off. The handkerchief didn't belong to any of us it was just waiting there for you. Almost like a warning. But you thanked the beings for their gift making a mockery of it. Mom why didn't you listen when i told you to stop?
By the time i was eight the voices were an occurrence in the house. I could hear everything they said. These creatures i called the whisperers. But i learned from you to ignore them all.
But that began to get harder and harder. I remember one night laying in my bed i heard the door creep open. I hadn't been able to sleep well so these noises constantly woke me up at night. But the whisperers never move objects so carelessly. I wanted to cry for you like a toddler mom, but i didn't want to endanger you.
I heared a yelp from the kitchen i had to go and see what evil was prying on my family.
The hallway was eerily cold even on this hot summers night. The light being already on made my decent to the kitchen less terrifying. My feet shattered the silence as i crept down the stairs.
I was so afraid that the sweat coming off me made my clothes stick like glue against my skin.Mom i don't want to scare you by saying what exactly was in the kitchen but i will give you a brief detailing. A small creature about two foot tall was standing in front of me mouth filled with razor sharp teeth. It gave of this sound like crackling fire and constant whispering.
While i watched this... Thing. It turned is gaze over to the right. I had not noticed her mom. I hadn't noticed Dino.
Our beloved hound laying on the ground with a knife edged into her body. She whined one last time taking her last breath and dying a painful death. I didn't know what to do mom. I cried. No i screamed while the river of tears fell from my eyes. I didn't know what to do mom. I couldn't help it.
Then i heared them, down the Hall again. Judy's door and your door was open. Oh god mom i was so frightened. Without thinking i ran into Judy's room. Judy was dead mom. I found her mutilated. I won't tell you how exactly you daughter died. Lets agree that she didn't stand a chance.
I had no time to grieve i had to check on dad. Strangely the light in your room was on. So i didn't need to go to far into the room to see dad laying there, two butter knives lodged into his throat. I didn't know how it was done.
You weren't in the room, why weren't you in the room? Did you hear it coming? Did you honestly think running to the basement was the best answer?
I knew immediately, mom. I knew you were down there trying to escape the evil upstairs. I ran downstairs trying to beat the whisperers to you.
I found you there mom. The light off. You were in front of the TV. You had gashes in your head and legs. Losing so much blood. When you saw me you screamed. You screamed loudly. I didn't understand.
But then i saw them the whisperers had beaten me to you and were chanting.
Kill her, kill her, kill her, kill her...
They were chanting at me mom. They wanted me to kill you. They were telling me you had to die.
That's when I looked at my hands.
They were covered in blood mom. Blood was staining my new nightgown. Blood was running down my arm. I was holding a knife in. My hands. A knife from the kitchen.
When i looked back up the whisperers were gone. It was just you and I.
I turned on the light and smiled. You screamed. I advanced on you. Raising the knife in my hands.
I told you never to go into the basement mom why didn't you listen to me?
