It's been ten years since Day left for Antarctica and he's returning to the Republic. For Day, there's always been something bugging him, a ghost of a person he can't recall. But on the flight back to the Republic, a name imprints itself into Day's mind: June. It's a link to the girl fate has tied him to.
----
The flight to the Republic lasted longer than I thought it would. I sit in the window seat, facing out, staring at the clouds zipped past my face. Eden sits next to me, talking to someone in his mike.
I think the person is Tess, and my hand fidgets nervously. I had called her the other day to announce my return with Eden. Eden wanted to get a job at Batalla Hall, in our hometown Los Angeles.
"Day!" Tess squealed when I called her. "It's been a long time. How have you been? Eden tells me you guys are coming back to LA!"
"Yeah," I had rubbed the back of my neck. "We are."
"That's wonderful!" I could practically hear Tess' excitement. "I'll be happy to see you." She muttered something below her breath, and I thought I had caught onto what she said. She said something like: I should tell...
I tried to ask Tess about it but she laughed it off, saying Pascao that she and Pascao had been getting closer since I first left LA ten years ago. She explained to me a few years ago about a Patriot Runner called Pascao, who I had known pretty well before this memory gap. Tess has helped me over the years, reminding me of events I don't quite remember. But there's a lingering memory of someone that Tess hasn't mentioned.
Eden doesn't prompt me about that person either. I'm not sure if he knows her, but he usually lets Tess catch me up on the events I had lost after my surgery.
"Landing in Drake University, Los Angeles." The pilot informs us.
When we get off the plane, I go with Eden to Batalla Hall. "It'll be a quick sign-in," he reassures me when he sees I'm itching to go to Tess' for dinner. "I'll be right out."
True to his promise, Eden comes out soon and we begin heading down the street. "We can take the train to the Ruby sector," Eden prompts. He looks up and there's a pause in his next sentence. "Tess isn't expecting us for another hour."
I look up to see what has caught his attention. There's a girl walking towards us. She's one of the only people on the street and I notice she looks down immediately and walk briskly past us.
Wait. I want to call out. There's a flash of something I can't grasp. A part of my past I can't recall.
"Wait here," I mutter to Eden before rushing after her. I jog over to where she is now.
"Hey," I breathe out.
She turns and subjects me to dark eyes flecked with gold. She looks beautiful. "Do I know you?" The answer is yes in my brain, but the girl shakes her head.
"No," she whispers.
I frown. "Are you sure?" I am positive I have known her from somewhere. "You look really familiar."
She hesitates. There's a poised elegance about her that I want to grasp. "I'm sorry," she mumbles, "I have to go meet a friend for dinner."
"Oh really? Me too actually," I want to give a nervous laugh but I quell it. "A friend down at Ruby's in fact."
Her eyes widen. "Is your friend Tess?"
I'm surprised. "You know her." I eye her and try in vain to figure out who she is. The girl nods once, her eyes on something on my hand. I look down too and notice the paper clip ring. I've had it since ten years ago, when I lost my memory, but I don't remember who gave it to me.
"It's you," I suddenly blurt out. The paper clip ring is practically humming with clues about this girl. Did you give it to me? I want to ask her.
"Is it?" The girl asks softly, her eyes still holding that hesitant, almost anguished look.
I explain to her about the fog around my mind, something covering a final piece to my past that I want to uncover. When I take her hand in mine, I can hear her inhale sharply. "Hi," I tell her, "I'm Daniel."
She smiles at me. "Hi, I'm June."
June. It's a beautiful name, suiting for someone like her. Eden catches up to us. "Hey," he smiles at June, "it's been a long time."
She dips her head at my brother, a hint of familiarity flashing over her eyes. So she does know us.
"We could go to Tess' together," I offer, "since we're both headed that way."
June looks on ahead. "Sure," she agrees, "I would like that." There's still a hesitant air around her, something that she doesn't want to dwell on or tell me. I don't push. I've just met her (again) and I don't want to ruin this moment.
We get to Tess' place without much difficulty, making light talk between us. It's then that June takes me aside to the living room, where no one else is. "Day--" She coughs suddenly, turning bright red.
I blink. Tess calls me Day all the time, I remember being Day, before my involvement with the war against the Colonies or with the Patriots. My memory only stretches as far as refusing to join the Patriots all the time and trying to help my family.
"I'm sorry," June says in a rush, "I should call you Daniel."
"Day is fine," I smile at her. "Tess calls me Day all the time. I suspect it's a common thing here in the Republic."
"You were a legend," June returns my smile, but it's still tense. "Do you really remember me or do you still know nothing about me?"
Suddenly I remember the girl who had walked in when I woke up from my coma. She had been dressed in a Republic uniform, and she had politely informed me about my role in the Republic's war against the Colonies and how I had been a hero.
"You were there that day," I murmur, catching her attention. "You told me of my deeds when I woke up."
"Yes," June bites her lip.
"Do you know who I am?" The girl had asked me that day.
"June...Iparis," for some reason, I suddenly remember in a flash her last name. "That's right, isn't it? Your name is June Iparis." The name suddenly brings an onslaught of memories. Memories attached to the family members I do remember.
The first memory I get is the memory of me kissing a girl in an alley. Her back is pressed against the wall and I flush when I realize it is June.
June watches me carefully. I reach over and hold her hand delicately. "I remember," I tell her gently, "there are pieces of you and me coming back."
The girl still does not smile. "Which pieces?" She whispers.
I can see her everywhere. "I fell in love with you," I hold her hand tighter, tugging her lightly towards me. She obliges and comes to a seat next to me. I search her eyes for the emotion that must have been there before. Sure enough, I can see the slight desire in her eyes.
"I fell in love with you," I repeat, the memories coming back. She's searching for something in me, but I don't know what. The familiar feeling that had once been love overcomes me.
I use my other hand to tip her head up and I bend over to kiss her lightly. Her other hand grabs the front of my shirt and tugs me closer, kissing me harder.
This.
For some reason, my family's death tugs at my mind, but I dismiss it. Whatever role June had in my past, it's here now. I loved her. I am going to make her mine again, no matter how hard it'll be.
But judging by the way we're kissing, I doubt it'll be too hard.
She pulls away, her eyes shining. "I love you," she rests her head on my shoulder. "I wanted to tell you that when you woke up, but it was too late. I want you to know that right now, even if things don't ever work between us."
"It will," I pull her head away so I can look into her eyes. "It will work."
When we kiss again, I close my eyes, losing myself in something I had lost so long ago. The links between us have been reconnected.
Intertwined.
