"Anna!" Tommy shouted as he saw her leave her class. She froze, wondering who would shout out at her like that. In a matter of seconds, Tommy stood before her with an expectant smile.
"Ready to go?" He asked.
"Go where?" She wasn't aware of any plans she had made with him, or anyone, for that afternoon.
"Home." he said as if she should have already known. He placed her arm around hers and began leading her toward the stairs that led outside.
"Uhm, yes, I guess." She looked down at their linked arms, "are you planning on walking me home or something?"
He looked at her again, still smiling, "Of course, we still have a lot of catching up to do, especially since our date yesterday was cut short." She stopped, pulling him back with her.
"Date? That wasn't a date. The first time we met was a date but only because we were set up but yesterday was not a date." She scolded.
"Then what was it?"
"I don't know but definitely not a date". She began to walk first and felt Tommy snake her arm around his once more. Sighing, she let him lead her outside.
"You do realise I don't live within walking distance from the school right? My mom will be here to pick me up" She asked, narrowing her eyes at him.
"Well now I do" he said and stopped as they entered the parking lot. "I guess I'll just wait with you."
"I guess you will."
"And since waiting requires conversation, when did you move schools and why haven't I noticed you before?"
"I came at the beginning of the year and I guess you didn't notice me because I didn't want to be noticed."
"Why not?"
"I wanted to blend in, find my own social standing before others could pick it for me."
"Valid point."
"There's my mom." She pointed at a red car heading toward them. "You should probably let go before she thinks there's something between us."
"Your arm is hooked around mine, you can let go at any moment." He said and he removed her arm as she stepped forward when her mother pulled to a stop. " Bye, Tommy." She called out.
He smiled and waved, the only thought in his mind that perhaps there was something between them, after all, she could have easily removed her arm at anytime.
With courage he hadn't realized he possessed, he jogged after Anna.
"Wait!" He yelled as she neared the car.
"What?" She asked.
"Will you go out with me?" He asked shyly, his courage slowly evaporating.
She laughed at his unexpected question and the tinge of pink that had coloured his cheeks.
"I already went out with you."
"Yeah but we were set up. You didn't know who I was." He stepped closer to her. "And now that you do have an idea of who I am, would you like to go out with me?" He asked in a soft voice, worried that she might reject him.
"You know what Tommy," she took a step closer to him and as she moved her lips to respond she was cut off by her mother shouting out her name.
Anna smiled and turned, walking with more speed than before and leaving Tommy behind her.
