"Hey Kelly, we should probably take the back alley at this next street," I said. My best friend, Kelly, and I were walking home from school. We were both tens, and since the other ranks spit on people like us, we tried to avoid them so we wouldn't have to face backlash.

"Yeah Sadie, you're right. There is a pretty large group of people up there," she responded.

"I bet it's for the drawing of the participants," I groaned. "Oh I almost forgot to ask you, but do you want to come over to my place later and watch them pick the names of the participants? Mom makes us watch them every single year and they are always so boring."

"Sure!" she exclaimed. "I'll be over around six, sound good?"

"Yeah, see you then!" I replied.

We both went our separate ways after we got out of the alley. I had gotten a nasty purple bruise on my ankle yesterday from a group of fours hiding behind a bush, because they thought it would be funny to use their telekinesis to pelt me with rocks. It hurt to walk on, so I just flew home instead.

"Hey mom, I'm home from school," I said.

"Hi Sadie! Did you have a good day?"

"Yeah it was great," I lied. Mom felt terrible whenever we told her about what people in the other ranks did to us on a daily basis, and she always felt so guilty that she couldn't do anything to stop the discrimination.

"Well that's nice to hear. Now make sure you get all of your homework done soon, because you have to come watch the annual drawing of the participants with us."

"Fine, but Kelly is going to come over later to watch it with us, it that okay?" I asked.

"Of course!" she said.

I walked up the stairs to go to my room, but before I could open the door, I was pushed to the side from the force of someone giving me a big hug.

"Yay! Sadie is home!" shouted my little brother Chris.

"Hey squirt, now go play with your toys or something because I have homework to do."

"Okay!" he said as he hopped down the hallway.

I went into my room, did my homework, and shortly afterwards Kelly came over.

Mom, Dad, Chris, and Rose (my older sister) were already in the family room watching the daily newscast. Kelly and I sat down with them, and were right on time for the annual drawing of the participants. The daily newscast ended, and we were now watching the royal family prepare to give the speech that would decide who would participate in the contest.

"My fellow citizens," said King Edgar. "It is again the time for the annual drawing of the participants. Everyone must know that if your name is called, you will be faced with many difficult challenges during the contest, but it is through these challenges that the most powerful of the power classes are rooted out. One person from each power class will be chosen not only to represent their power class, but to lead the power class they are from to victory."

Queen Scarlet handed him an envelope.

The King started talking again. "I now have the names of the participants for this years contest. The only thing left to do is declare them to the world."

King Edgar opened the envelope.

"For the current rank ones, those with possession powers, your candidate is Annabelle Myers, age nineteen. For the current rank twos, those with animation powers, your candidate is Mason Dunn, age seventeen. For the current rank threes, those with the power of metamorphosis, your candidate is Mark Stephens, age sixteen. For the current rank fours, those with the power of telekinesis, your candidate is Amelia Hays, age eighteen. For the current rank fives, those with the powers of strength, your candidate is Aria Holland, age fifteen. For the current rank sixes, those with teleportation powers, your candidate is Lucas Holt, age seventeen. For the current rank sevens, those with the power of quantum tunneling, your candidate is Mia Chapman, age nineteen. For the current rank eights, those with the powers of speed, your candidate is Gray Simmons, age sixteen. For the current rank nines, those with the power of invisibility, your candidate is Oliver Saunders, age eighteen. Finally, for the current rank tens, those with the power of flight, your candidate is Sadie Jameson, age seventeen."

My family room became silent. King Edgar was finishing his speech, but I wasn't listening.

The world became dizzy, and suddenly everything went black.

Hey everyone! Hope you enjoyed the first chapter. The second one should be coming out soon!
